“Well, you fell for Mirabel. She’s poor.”

My neck cracked as I turned sharply to stare at her. “Why would that fucking matter?”

Savanah grinned. “You normally knock about with our crowd.”

“Our crowd?” I put down my fork. “What about you and your dealers? They’re not exactly our”—I hooked my fingers—“crowd.”

“That’s because our lot are so fucking boring. And half of them are into weird shit, like wearing girls’ knickers. In any case, this is about you, not me.” She dabbed her mouth with a napkin. “What I meant to say was you normally go for girls in designer. You’ve probably fucked every girl in this scene.”

My sister had an obsession with our bedroom habits, which wasn’t a subject I cared for.

“I’m not keeping count.” I cracked a tight smile. “In any case, that’s in the past. I’ve changed.”

“You’ve become a bore, like everyone else.” She took a small forkful of vegetables. Her meat was untouched.

“Aren’t you eating?”

“Mm… I’m thinking of going off meat for a while. It doesn’t agree with me.”

“You look pale and have lost weight, Savvie.” I gave her my concerned frown.

“I’m fine. What were we saying? Oh, that’s right—you falling for poor girls.”

“Mirabel’s not poor. Her song’s killing it right now.”

“So youhavebeen following her?” Savanah smirked.

I hadn’t stopped. I watched her on YouTube all the time.

“I don’t want to talk about this right now, Savvie.”

After dinner, I walked outside with Declan for some air and a break from all the questions about my private life.

“If I hear another person asking me when I’m going to marry or where I’m hiding that special girl, I’ll fucking lose it,” I said. “I almost told Lavinia that I had a few hiding in the cellar and that I roll them out when I need one to iron a shirt or massage my shoulders.”

Declan laughed. “Massage your shoulders?”

“Lavinia’s—what? Eighty or something. I couldn’t exactly be lewd. Although I was a bit more upfront with Camila. I told her that I wheeled them out when I needed pleasuring.” I laughed, recalling the seventy-year-old woman’s horror.

“You’ve only been out with that one girl, apart from Mirabel, all year,” he said, as we walked around the lit-up grounds.

Those unforgettable few weeks of unbridled sex a couple of months back with Mirabel felt like a lifetime.

I missed her more than ever.

Where was that shallow prat, she’d accused me of being, when I needed him?

Drake walked over. He’d been employed as Merivale’s security after more jewellery went missing.

“Hey, Drake, caught any cat burglars?” I asked.

Drake chuckled. “Nope.”

“Have you heard from Billy?” Declan asked.

He nodded. “He’s okay. He appreciated that job you got for him.”

We walked away and sat on the bench. “Any news from the PI?”
