“Yes, of course! Of course, I will!” Amanda cried, and Nate slid the ring onto her finger.

Everyone was cheering madly as they hugged and kissed in celebration.

I shook my head in amazement. I was so happy I was here to witness it. Luke gave me a little squeeze and a quick kiss on my head before returning to the bar.

I went and found my brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law and congratulated them. They were deliriously happy and I was left feeling a tad envious.

In all my years with Stefan, I always felt like there was something missing. My career didn’t leave much room for relationships and we easily became convenient companions. So when I discovered he was cheating on me, I wasn’t entirely heartbroken. That’s when I knew it wasn’t love. Not real love. We cared for each other, just not enough. I wanted something more. Something I may never experience. So, I filled the void with alcohol instead.

Luke managed to take the rest of the night off, but still spent most of his time behind the bar pouring shots of tequila for the both of us. We took it in turns asking each other serious, and seriously funny, true or false questions and taking a shot if the answers were true. It was a game we all used to play as teens, but Luke and I had never played it together. We learnt a lot about each other in a very short time.

“Hey, I just realised that this is the first time we have ever gotten drunk together. How can that even be possible?” I asked Luke, perplexed at the thought.

He shrugged and took another shot.

I scrunched up my face. “Come to think of it, you never got drunk when I was around,” I said. “Only with Nate.” I frowned, but burst out laughing when I tried to hold it. I had always been jealous of Nate and Luke’s friendship.

Luke lent over the bar, as if to tell me a secret. “Probably because I would likely forget you were Nate’s little sister, and I didn’t want to screw up our friendship,” he said, half-jokingly, leaving me wondering if he was referring to Nate’s friendship or mine. It appeared that I had become too tipsy to care.

“But you’re drunk now, and I’m still Nate’s little sister,” I challenged with a sly grin.

“I’m not drunk,” Luke denied, and accidentally knocked his glass to the floor, smashing it to pieces. We both broke into fits of laughter.
