I dropped my chin to see what was so funny. Fuck. My hoodie was on backwards.

“Just let him,” Melanie said, rolling her eyes. “He just loooves coming to the rescue.”

I let out a defeated sigh as I rearranged my clothing. “Alright, thanks.”

“Grab your things. I’ll carry Amy to the car.” Grayson handed me the bottle of water before scooping Amy off the couch with little effort.

“I’m going to bed,” Melanie mumbled as she stumbled across the lounge room and into the bedroom opposite Grayson’s. “Goodnight.”

A knot untied in my stomach at the confirmation they weren’t sharing a bed. “Goodnight, Mel.”

“You coming?” Grayson asked, with an irritated edge to his voice after observing my relief.

With a small nod, I picked up my bag and followed him out of the apartment.

As I entered Amy’s East Village address into the GPS, Grayson strapped her into the backseat while she mumbled something incoherent about secrets. Less than a minute later, her endearing snores filled the car as we pulled away from the curb.

“You’ll feel like shit tomorrow if you don’t drink that water,” Grayson said, staring out of the windshield.

I stopped picking at the label and placed the bottle into the drink holder between us. “I know how to handle a hangov—”

“Are you deliberately trying to make this harder?” he snapped, gripping the steering wheel tighter.

I screwed up my face. “Fine! I’ll drink the damn water!”

“That’s not what I meant,” he growled. “Why were you at my place?”

I exhaled loudly. “Melanie asked me over, what was I supposed to say?”

“Say no! You’re not her friend.”

“Why can’t I be?” I asked, crossing my arms. “We could be best friends.”

Grayson scoffed, irritating me even more.

“What’s the problem? Afraid she’ll start liking me more than you?” I tilted my head as I watched him closely, before putting on a baby voice. “Is somewon a liddle bwit jealwous?”

He stopped at a red light with more force than necessary, and turned my way. “I’m jealous because you were in my apartment spending time with my ex, rather than in my bed screaming my name. So yeah, I am pretty fucking jealous.”

“Daaaamn,” Amy drawled, poking her head out from between the seats.

“Ames!” I cried. We’d clearly forgotten she was in the car.

“That was…hot,” she moaned, before sinking back into the seat.

Blush rose up Grayson’s neck as he continued to drive, while I stared out the window trying to cool the heat in my cheeks.

“Does anyone else feel like a burrito?” she asked, oblivious to our embarrassment.

I pressed my lips together, holding back a smile, but Grayson’s sideways glance set me off. I burst out laughing and Grayson followed. The tension between us evaporated as his deep chested laughter, and my drunken giggles, filled the car.

As we pulled up beside Amy’s East Village apartment building, I jumped out of the car to help Grayson convince Amy to leave the comfy confines of his leather interior.

“Thanks for the ride, boss man,” Amy slurred as she crawled out of the car and wrapped her arms around Grayson.

He momentarily froze before giving her a light pat on the back. “No problem, Amy.” His eyes met mine over her head and a smile played on his lips. His soft, beautiful lips.

Ignoring my pounding heart, I pulled her away. “Come on, Ames. Let’s get you upstairs.”
