I whirled around to face her. “Did you know?”

“I didn’t see this coming, I promise. When I saw him here a couple of weeks ago, I assumed he was looking for you, not buying the business.”

My mouth fell open. “He was the one in the hallway, wasn’t he?” I’m such an idiot.

Amy winced as she nodded. “Did he yell at you for being late?”

“He didn’t get a chance,” I said, handing her the evidence before bending over the sink. The cool water felt glorious as I splashed it over my face, and I thanked the lord I decided to wear waterproof mascara...last night.

She glanced down and gagged. “Oh my god, you didn’t?”

“He’s lucky I didn’t vomit on his Armani shoes.” I gazed up at my dishevelled reflection and moaned. “What have I done?”

Scurrying back into my office a short time later, I switched on my laptop. While waiting for it to load, I noticed Linda carrying boxes into the room beside Amy. The room that had laid vacant since the last job cuts. My gaze shifted to Amy, and she motioned to her computer as mine chimed.

A. MITCHELL: Do we have a new neighbor?

Linda unloaded bundles of files onto the desk in the middle of the room, and shuffled the furniture around until she looked content.

J. SPENCER: Linda is preparing it for someone. Marlene perhaps?

A. MITCHELL: It can’t be for Marlene. She’s already downsized into the office next to the conference room.

J. SPENCER: Hopefully they’re just using it for storage.

A. MITCHELL: Boring!

My chuckle dissolved when I spotted Grayson enter the office and converse with Linda. He settled into the chair behind the large desk and opened his laptop. For fucks sake.

His eyes flickered across to mine and I quickly dropped my gaze back to the computer screen.

A. MITCHELL: Who is it?

J. SPENCER: *angry face* You know who.

A. MITCHELL: I’ll happily swap offices if I get to stare at that all day.

J. SPENCER: *face palm*

I opened my email, and watched my inbox fill. The last three to come through were from William Harlow. The first, a group email, welcoming us all to Harlow Corp. The second, another group email, with an attachment of the new agreement we all had to print, sign and return. And the third, to me.

Josie, we need to talk.

Ha! Not a chance.

I closed the window and opened up the story I’d been working on, keen to get well and truly distracted. Hours passed as I sat, staring at my computer screen, trying to ease my temper. My neck hurt from being frozen in the same position, fearing I’d make eye contact with Grayson if I moved. Why couldn’t he share Marlene’s old office with his brother? Was the room not big enough for both of their egos?

My message window popped up.

W. HARLOW: Got a minute?

My breath caught. I knew Grayson was watching because he had full view of my desk from his, even with all the shrubbery.

J. SPENCER: Who dis?

W. HARLOW: Please?

I had nothing nice to say, and now that he was my boss, it was all the more reason not to say anything.
