Aloud ringing infiltrated my blissful slumber. “Can you tell your phone to be quiet?” I prodded Adam’s side. “I’m trying to recover here.”

“It’s yours,” he grumbled, prodding me back. “I turned mine off last night.”

My face whipped to Adam. “You turned your phone off?” I couldn’t believe it.

His sleepy smile turned my insides to goo as he rolled onto his side. “I didn’t want any disruptions.”

“Oh.”

“But you really should get that.” He motioned to the persistent ringing. “It might be Finn.”

“Shit, you’re right.” I scanned the floor, zeroing in on our cast-off clothes. “Where’s my cell?”

“It must be in the living room.” Adam pushed himself out of bed. “I’ll get it. Do not fucking leave my bed.”

With a giggle, I fell back into the pillows. “I won’t argue with that,” I said, tilting my head for a better view of his tight ass parading down the hall.

Adam returned to the bedroom moments later. “Why is Marc calling you?”

“Marc? Like Doctor Marc?” I shot out of bed and threw on Adam’s old Stanford t-shirt.

Adam reluctantly held out the phone. “If he asks you out again, I’ll fucking…”

I hushed his voice as I answered. “Marc? Is everything okay?”

“Liam’s taken a turn, Cassidy,” he said in a tone I knew too well. “You need to get back here as soon as possible.”

I peered up at Adam, knowing my next words would break his heart. “How much time does he have?”

Adam’s blue eyes turned to ice as his shoulders sank.

“A couple of days, maybe less. It’s hard to tell at this point.”

My lower lip trembled as I stared at the beautiful man crumbling before me.

“Listen, the family is desperately trying to reach Adam. Josie seems to think you’d know where to find him.”

“Yes, I know where he is.” Although, his far-off gaze told me otherwise. “We’ll come back straight away.”

I lowered my eyes as I ended the call, trying to rein in my emotion. I was entirely too close to this. “Adam…your grandfather has deteriorated. We need to get back.”

“I’m staying.”

“What?” I moved toward him, not understanding.

“I’m not going to watch him die, Cassidy.” He stood and proceeded to pull on his swimming trunks.

“Adam, please. He wants you there. You’re his family.”

His lips pursed as he looked away. “I’m going for a swim,” he said, reaching for a towel.

“Why are you being so selfish?”

“Because that is who I am.” He yanked open the sliding door. “You should know that by now.”

I closed my eyes, smothering the burn. “I never should’ve agreed to come here.” I shook my head as rage surged through my body. “I should’ve been with your grandfather, doing my job, not here in Malibu, sleeping in your bed. God knows how scared Liam’s feeling right now.”
