With a final kiss to her mouth, I faced forward and continued to watch the movie playing on the screen. She didn’t remove herself from my hold, and I took that as a good sign.

We’d be more than okay.

But first, I’d have a talk with the moron sulking to my other side. He’d learn or walk away with a broken limb.

Either worked for me.

Chapter 5:

Following Morning

“YOU MIGHT WANT to get up and make yourself presentable, jerk.” Emily bounded into my room, causing the door to slam against the wall and bounce closed from the force. Instead of looking at her or yelling, I burrowed deeper under my covers and tried to fall back to sleep.

Thirty seconds. That was all she gave me before throwing them off and opening the blinds.

Girl was lucky I’d slept in pajama pants last night and not my normal a la nude mode. That, and I still had a thin sheet in my grasp.

“Run, squirt. Run, and fast,” I hissed out, closing my eyes to avoid the sudden brightness consuming the room. The harsh brilliance hurt my “just woke up” sensitive vision.

“You owe me an explanation, Jolly Green.” Her footfalls came closer and then paused. The end of my mattress dipped. “What’s going on with you and Bailey?”

“None of your business until I decide to include you.”

“Fuck that, Hunter.” At her curse, I raised my head off the pillow and glared. It was way too early for this inquisitive shit. Looking over at my clock on the nightstand, I noticed it was half past nine and I needed to get a move on. I’d promised to help downstairs. “...she’s my best friend and if this ends bad, I could lose her. You can’t screw me on this.”

God, I love my sister, but at the moment, I wanted to throttle her.

“Why all the negativity? Have some faith, Emi.” This conversation could have waited until I at least had coffee.

Or a kiss from my girl.

Emily was not the kind of wake-up call I was yearning for. What I was hungry for was sweet and pink—soft and oh so deliciously wet.

My cock twitched, and I thanked every deity above that I’d been lying face down. One hundred and twenty seconds of thinking about sad shit took care of my semi, but not the annoyance looking at me with a sour expression. She acts as if I stormed into her room.

“Get out.” She went to protest, but I held a hand up. “We will talk when I am ready, and only then. Let me clear some things with Bailey first, and then I’ll fill you in.”

“Promise, blockhead?”

Ignoring the insult, I waved her off with a nod. “Out you go.”

“Okay, but...” she pursed her lips; the skin between her eyes scrunched up “...you hurt her, and I’ll kick your ass. Brother or not.” With her arms crossed over her chest, Emi locked her sight on mine and let me see just how serious she was.

I’ll give her that; she looked ready to deck me.

And, it took everything within me not to laugh in her face.

It was then that I noticed the ridiculous outfit she had on. Who the hell wears a tutu over spandex bike shorts? It was bright and full of some kind of glitter; she looked utterly ridiculous for someone in charge of hosing down the lounge chairs and setting up the picnic table buffet area.

The entire thing hurt my eyes.

Our parents had decided late last night that having everyone home for the next week merited a barbecue with family and friends. I’d been annoyed at first, having wanted to spend the day alone with Bailey.

We still had so much to talk about. Expectations shared and agreed upon. Settle on where she’d live next year.

However, it took about five minutes for me to get over the disappointment. A thought appeared that had piqued more than just my interest.
