Quickly, I swiped up and my phone lit up.

Sorry, baby. Bad storm. Signal is horrible. ?? ~Momma Bear

It’s okay. Are you safe? ~Kiddo

That’s all that mattered. Sucked, but I’d see her soon enough.

I am. Miss you so much! ~Momma Bear

Bought you the cutest summer dress today. You’re going to love it! ?? ~Momma Bear

Turning myself around, I’d just begun to crawl up the bed when my bedroom door opened and closed. The lock clicked into place, and I held a hand out for Emily to give me a minute.

That girl had been salivating at the prospect of gossip, and her brother’s display earlier more than likely fueled that fire. No matter how much I’d sworn that nothing had happened, she now wouldn’t believe me.

With my back to her, I sat up on my knees and sent a final message to Mom.

Pics, please! I’ll try again later. Emi just came to pull me downstairs. Family BBQ. Love and miss you lots. ~Kiddo

“What do you want to know, babe?” Tossing the phone beside my laptop, I stretched my back, arching. “Hit me. I’m ready for you.”

Was just about to situate myself so she can harass me, when I heard it.

A groan.

Male.

I froze. Every muscle in my body locked down at the sound of his voice. Didn’t have to turn around to know that Hunter was within my walls. Close.

My skin broke out in goose bumps, and a harsh shiver ran up my spine. My fingers, which had been holding on to the headboard, dug in deeper. Almost to the point of pain.

“Bailey. Baby,” Hunter crooned low while the bed dipped behind me. It shifted, his weight distributing before stilling. “I want more than you are willing to give. Don’t tempt.”

“What’re you doing up here?” My mind was shouting at me to move, but my muscles wouldn’t cooperate. There was a part of me, minuscule and perverted, that wanted him closer. Yearned for him to want me the way I wanted him.

“We need to talk.” More shuffling, his heat coming closer. His presence in my room was near stifling—intimidating. “Misunderstandings need to be explained and settled. We need to be settled.”

“Hunter, you need to move back. Please, for both of our sakes.” I couldn’t control the way my voice shook. How each time he exhaled against my skin I shivered.

“Cold, baby? Let me help you with that.”

“Shouldn’t you be…oh God,” I whimpered. His naked chest was now pressed against my bare back. Skin on skin. Hard on soft.

Words died on my tongue and I leaned back, head resting against warm flesh, and my eyes closed. In all my eighteen years, I’d never felt this kind of exhilaration before.

This palpitating pleasure that throbbed within my veins.

Hunter nuzzled my neck, teeth grazing my skin. “There’s nowhere else I need to be, but with you. The sooner you accept that truth, the easier things will be. Let me in, sweet girl. I’m not going to hurt you.”

At once, my hackles rose. I tried to turn around, but his arm snaked around my waist and pulled me tighter against him, preventing me from so much as shifting. Trapped, there was no give in his hold.

“Let go.”

“Never.” The conviction in his voice almost made me forget her display downstairs.

“Where’s Erica?” I demanded, my tone holding a touch of bitterness. “Shouldn’t she be all over you?”

“Don’t care where she is.” He inhaled my scent and groaned as if in pain. “You would know as much had you watched my reaction to her hug.” That unfaithful flutter of hope appeared, and my heart thumped inside my chest. “I made it clear that my girl didn’t appreciate other women touching me. That I enjoyed her possessiveness. How she owns me.”
