“He’s here somewhere,” Nyx stubs out his smoke in the ashtray. “Ella speak to you about Sunday?” he checks.

“Yeah, I’m in.”

Ella likes to do the whole Sunday family dinner thing, and I have to admit, I kinda look forward to it.

“I met up with her Mom earlier,” I confess. Nyx knowsas well as I do how Ella is missing her Mom, despite her not having a lot of respect for Joanne right now. She’s confused, and I may not have a lot of respect for Joanne myself but I want her to be part of Ella’s life.

“How’d that go?” he asks, signaling for Haven to bring us a drink by raising two fingers.

“I don’t think she’ll be stopping by anytime soon,” I say feeling disappointed for Ella.

Nyx shakes his head.

“Her loss.”

The shots land on the bar and we both neck them in one.

“If you see Brax tell him I’m in the members bar,” I tell him moving on.

“Gotcha Pops.” Nyx’s smart mouth earns him a firm clip across the head, with any luck it’ll knock some sense into him.

“I’ll see ya Sunday then,” he calls after me as I make my way out into the foyer and into the quieter bar.

I help myself to another drink. It’s just me in here, which works well because I haven’t told the other brothers about the task I'm setting Brax.

I hate having to keep stuff from my brothers, but this shit is heavy, the fewer people that know, the better, which is why I'm worried about putting all my trust in Brax.

The guy can handle business. He’s been a nomad ever since he patched in at the Utah Charter. He’s visited us over the years, helped us out whenever we needed him. But I’ve always wondered what his deal is.

Hearing Nyx was his brother came as a shock to all ofus. Why he’d kept something like that to himself and chose now to tell the kid, makes no sense or reason. I’ll get to the bottom of it eventually, but right now I got bigger shit to deal with.

The door knocksand he steps inside. “You wanted to see me, boss?” he says, marching straight to the bar to help himself. I'm slowly starting to see it now, the resemblance between him and Nyx, both of them have thatsame arrogant walk. The same chip on their shoulder. Their eyes may be different, but they share the same pouty mouths.

“Take a seat,” I tell him.

He gets himself a drink and balances his ass on one of the stools before knocking it back. Things kicked off between me and him when I learned he’d lied to me and told me the bastards were watching Ella to protect Nyx.

I’m human, I got why he did it, he was protecting his brother, but there had been consequences to his actions, and my girl spent months dealing with shit she shouldn’t have had toalone. I saw his guilt, and he’s made his redemption by becoming a good uncle to my grandson. It’s only been a few months but I’ve noticed a slight change in him already, and I wasn’t shocked when he asked me last month if he could become an official member of our Charter.

“You spoke to the boys yet?” he asks, knowing that I’m gonna have to call a vote on that decision.

“Not yet… There’s something I need you to do first. A nomad kinda job.”

Brax turns down his bottom lip and nods.

“Chop?”

“Nah, no more leads on that one. He’s sitting quiet for now but we’re waiting for him to resurface.”

“So, who is it? Hell Prez, if you’re hiding another secret daughter, I’ll warn you now, you’re sending the wrong guy. I don’t play nice.”

“She’s not my daughter,” I tell him and watch his face suddenly turn serious.

“She’s a she though?” Brax looks fucking judgy back at me. “You know the rules Prez. No women, or kids,” he reminds me, knowing that there’s only ever one service I usually require out of him.

“Jesus Christ, Brax, I’m not asking you to kill anyone.” I snatchthe bottle out of his hands and take a swig.

“It’ll be a first,” he smirks back at me arrogantly.
