“I do,” I manage, ignoring the glare I’m getting from Raoul.

“Beautiful, smart, she will make a good wife for my son. Do you agree?” He’s taunting me now, I can tell from the satisfied look on his face.

“I can’t think of anyone better matched.” I smile bravely, and pick up my glass of water. “In fact, I’d like to make a toast, if I may, sir?” I check with the man of the house and actually hear the growl that comes from Raoul.

“By all means,” he nods for me to continue.

“To Mr. and Mrs. Burlusconi, present…” I gesture my glass toward Raoul’s parents,”…and future.” I stare across the table to Raoul, who’s looking at me murderously, and despite him nodding his head back politely at me and raising his glass, I sense the trouble I’m in.

Somehow I get through the rest of the dinner, and Vi excuses us from the table so she can take me to her room and find me something to wear for our night out. Apparently, we haven’t got time for me to go ‘home’ to change, we have pre-drinks scheduled at Claude's place.

“Did you see the look on his face when he saw you?” she whispers, giggling like a child as she drags me along the landing toward her room.

“That was the most awkward forty-five minutes of my life. And why didn’t you tell me about tonight? I haven’t checked with Raoul,” I scold her under my breath.

“Oh please. He’s not your keeper. Having a night out will do you some good. Invite that friend of yours you’re always talking about, she sounds like fun.”

“Vi, he was furious. I knew I shouldn’t have come. How could you lie to me like that?”

“You would never have come if I told you he didn’t know, and I needed you here.” She bats her eyes at me. “You tell me that look on my brother’s face wasn’t priceless.” She laughs again.

“You are going straight to hell.” I snatch whatever it is she throws at me from her wardrobe in mid-air.
