Page 63 of His Sacrifice

“None.” I smile back when I realize that was a statement, not a question.

“How about you, got any gangster shit to deal with?” I ask sarcastically, and he laughs at me while shaking his head.

“Raoul, why were you at the ranch yesterday before dinner?” I have to ask because it’s been on my mind all night. Briella Quinn is one thing but I can’t stand the thought of him being with other women, not while we’re so close.

“I can’t tell you that.” He clutches my hand and pulls it to his mouth to kiss, but I tug it away.

“Did you fuck anyone?”

He laughs again, loud and fucking humiliatingly. And it only makes me angrier.

“No, I did not fuck anybody. I just can’t tell you what I was doing. Evelyn, I’ve wanted one woman for twelve years, and now I have limited time with her. Do you really think I’d waste time with anyone else?” He looks at me doubtfully.

I shrug back at him, trying not to let the huge smile that’s threatening break onto my lips.

“Jealousy's hot on you.” He wraps his arm around my shoulder and forces me closer so he can kiss my temple.

“Stop it.” I push him away playfully.

“I will not.” He fights against me until he’s got me pinned, and then he kisses me in that way that makes my stomach flip.

My phone starts to ring in my purse, and I blindly feel around his body at the seat to try and find it. I’ll bet it’s Kendra wanting the gossip from last night.

“Hello,” I giggle, forcing my lips off Raoul’s to answer.

“Evelyn…” I barely recognize the voice that sobs down the phone at me.

“Mama?”

Raoul pulls back from me to give me some space.

“Yes, it’s me. Something terrible happened. I didn’t know who else to call.” She sounds manic, and despite all that’s happened between us I can’t help worrying about her.

“It’s Kevin. They just found his body. He’s been murdered, Evelyn,” she cries, and when I look at Raoul, he shifts awkwardly as he lights himself a cigarette.

“Mama, is someone with you now?” I ask.

“Yes, a policewoman, and an investigator. He owed some money to this stupid gang in town, they think they were the ones who did it. What if they come for me too?”

“Mama, I’m driving through the city right now,” I lie, staring at Raoul and getting a black feeling of dread spread through the pit of my stomach.

“I’ll call you back as soon as I can pull over. Just stay calm, okay? Breathe into a paper bag and count to ten like we used to.”

“Okay,” she agrees, hanging up the phone, and my hands shake as I let my cell fall onto the seat.

“Raoul, what did you do?”
