“What was that for? I never said shit,” Jessie smirks at her as he rubs the back of his head.

“I don’t know what you two are playing around at up in that cabin. I’d make a fantastic Grandma.” She folds her arms across her chest.

“You're gonna have to speak to your daughter on that one. Trust me, I’m all about procreation. She’s the one putting the brakes on.”

Everyone talking like things are fucking normal gets too much, and I move from the bar to head out for some air. I hear a stool scrape behind me and Jessie call out after me, but I keep moving forward.

“Hey man, I’m sorry about that.” He rushes to catch up with me just as I make it outside.

“Ain’t your fault,” I tell him, lighting myself up a smoke.

“No one knows how to be around you right now. You’re all shut off and acting like you don’t care about shit.” He rests his shoulders against the clubhouse wall and lights one up too.

“All I can think about is making people hurt, Jess. I can’t think about her, it hurts too much.”

“We’ll get your guy, Troj,” he promises. “But you can’t lose yourself in the meantime.”

“I’m already fuckin’ lost, Jess,” I tell him, throwing my smoke into the dust and crushing it under my boot.

“I thought you were staying in bed?”

Maddy’s up and working at the table when I walk back into our cabin.

She looks fuckin’ beautiful wearing one of my club T-shirts, and her hair’s knotted on top of her head, secured with a pencil.

She’s barely been sleeping since this whole tragedy happened, putting all her time and effort into trying to find out who else could have been working with Cooper.

“I can’t just lay there knowing that someone knows who this guy is,” she tells me sadly.

“Your mom sent this up,” I place the take-out box with her breakfast in on the table beside her, and she takes her eyes from the screen for a second to smile up at me.

“How’s Troj?” She sets straight back to work, while I go to the drawer and get her a fork.

“In bad shape,” I answer honestly, straddling the chair beside her and holding the fork up in front of the screen so she can’t ignore it.

“I can’t believe he let her leave,” she shakes her head, then admits defeat with a sigh as she takes the fork, and opens up the container ready to tuck in.

“You know your mom said something funny just now,” I decide to bring up what’s been on my mind as I fold my arms on the table and watch her eat.

“What’s she said now?” Mads cringes. Marilyn’s always speaking her mind, and she ain’t tactful about how it comes out. But she’s got a big heart and is just what the club needs.

“She asked if you might be pregnant,” I mention casually, watching for her reaction. She looks like her breakfast just turned fuckin’ sour and places it back down.

“We spoke about this, Jessie.” Her head shakes at me as she gets up from her chair and makes her way toward the kitchen to flick on the coffee machine.

She keeps her back to me, thinking she can avoid the conversation we’re about to have.

I go to her, resting my chin on her shoulder and wrapping my arms around her waist.

“I thought we took that off the table for now.” She tries to ignore the kisses that I dab along her jaw as my hand slides over her flat stomach and edges into the front of her panties.

“Well, I wanna put it back on the table.” I drop my middle finger so it slides between her pussy lips, and she makes that sweet little moan that I can’t get enough of.

“It ain’t happening, Jessie, not yet.” Her head rolls back while she enjoys my finger massaging her clit.

“You sure about that, darlin’?” I check, quickly spinning her around and lifting her onto the kitchen counter.

“You can manipulate me into a lot of things using that thing…” she looks down between our bodies at where I’m standing hard for her, “But not into that.” She says softly, wrapping her arms around my neck then kissing my lips.
