Speaking my little girl's name out loud puts a lump of regret in my throat. The kind that catches you right behind the eyes and makes you choke on the tears you gotta keep inside.

I hate that she’s not here, that she doesn’t know her sister or her nephew. The two of them would have been friends. My girls, the best parts of me.

I loved that girl with every piece of my heart and I took every second of her life for granted. Nothing in the world, not even a second chance at being a father and a grandpa is gonna stop me regretting that.

“Mads, I can’t have a war going on inside my club. If Jessie knows Chop killed his dad, he won’t rest until he finds him. He’ll be relentless. He’ll make hunting him down his life’s work, and we’ll lose him until he gets what he needs. Because he would, as God is my judge, that boy won’t stop until he did,” I warn her. “And then what? How does Skid heal? Jessie may have lost a whole lot but he’s got you, Maddy, what’s Skid got?”

“I hate lying to him,” she whispers weakly, accepting defeat.

“Sometimes we gotta do what’s best for the greater good,” I point out.

“It’s gonna come out someday, Prez, and when it does, Jess is gonna hate us for keeping this from him.” She sinks the last of her scotch before slamming it in the bar. “You know Jessie ain’t the only one you need to worry about. Do you know who killed Brax and Nyx’s mom?”

I have to work at keeping the shock from my face, not from what she’s saying, it’s nothing new. I've spoken to Brax and Nyx and we all have an understanding.

But the fact she knows, sets me off my guard.

“I’m aware,” I nod my head.

“And you know that we aren’t the only people who know about that recording Chop was looking for, and the fact that it holds the answer to why Chop killed Jessie’s Dad. Meaning that we aren’t the only ones in this club that know who killed Brian Donavon.”

This. This is news to me.

“Care to enlighten me.” I pour myself another drink, it looks like I’m gonna need one.

“Who was prospecting at the Utah Charter when all this happened? Who would have wanted to make the death of Chop justified if he had gone through with it?”

She questions me cleverly.

“Brax.” The name whispers from my lips as everything pulls together in my head. Good job I trust the man with my life, because he sure seems to knows a lot of the secrets around here.

How did I not see this?

“He’s the one who set up the recorder the night Chop busted Jessie’s Dad's Charter. He was the one who sent it as a threat to Chop, and we both know that Brax is wired the exact same way as Jessie is. I just hope one day he doesn’t decide to rebel and go get that justice, because he’d sure know where to find himself some backing.” As much as I hate it, the girl makes a valid point.

“How do you even come up with all this?” I shake my head, still shocked at how her head works.

“Just like you and your VP, I make it my business to know everything,” she points out before moving toward the door.

It scares me sometimes, that this girl who I’ve known for such a short time knows more than I can tell my own VP.

“Maddy.” I stop her before she can leave.

“We’re doing this for Jessie. Try and remember that.” I keep my voice low and calm, hoping it will validate the wrong we’re doing.

“That doesn’t stop it hurting,” she tells me with a sad smile, before she exits.

“Whoh, what’s up with geek girl?” Squealer strolls in just after her.

“What you doin’ here, Squeal?” I ignore his question. God, I swear if another person is coming at me with a problem today, I’m gonna lose my shit.

“I’m just looking for some space, it’s like a fuckin’ holy communion party in there,” his thumb shoots in the direction of the main bar room. “The whores are getting outnumbered by old ladies.”

“Jealous?” I raise my eyebrows at him.

“Of what? Those cunt-struck losers? Never.” He curls his lip and shakes his head at me. Taking a toothpick out of his cut, he slides it between his teeth then sinks back into one of the leather chairs and kicks his boots up on the table.

“You ever think there’s more to this life than fucking pussy and making people bleed?” I snort a laugh at him. Squealer and his brother are both unique characters. And despite the mother fucker in front of me being a permanent pain in the ass, he’s a solid fuckin’ member of this club.
