“Because things are better that way.” The smile drops off his face. “Roof’s nearly finished on Calian and Tayen’s place. They could be home in a few days,” he quickly changes the subject.

“That’s great news. Tayen’s been trying to teach Ella how to crochet,” I tell him, and the atmosphere lightens when we both laugh.

“Our girls have their own talents,” he sniggers, and as I feel my mouth drop open, I see horror creep on to his face.

“No, I didn’t mean like that. What I meant was… Shit,” Troj curses himself and looks up at the sky.

“I meant the girls, they ain’t all that domesticated. Especially Rogue, hell that bitch is feral. But they care. Fiercely,” he assures me.

“I know,” I whisper. I’ve seen the love the women at the club have for their men. I’ve also seen how the brothers who have ‘old ladies’ seem to worship the ground they walk on. Even the hard-assed looking one, Brax.

“I should get back to work,” Troj nods his head back toward Tayen’s hut.

“Wait,” I quickly call out after him, unsure what I intend to follow up with. Then when he turns around and looks at me, I suddenly know exactly what it is I need to tell him. Checking the space around us to see who's watching, I race toward him, grabbing his hand and pulling him into the gap between two cabins. The space isn’t tight, but I keep his body close to mine as I reach up on my tiptoes and allow my lips to connect with his again.

His eyes close and he breathes me in. His free hand sliding onto my hip and holding me firm as he kisses me back with a softness I don’t expect from him.

“I can handle you, Troj, and I want to be yours, just like you said.” I pull away to tell him, and before I can catch my breath he switches our bodies, so it’s my back that's pressed against the slatted wood.

“You sure ‘bout that, darlin’?” He looks down at me menacingly.

“I’m sure,” I promise, stretching up to take his lips again. His hand slides up my neck and rests behind my ear, and it feels so good to have his fingers on my skin again.

“Then we’ll figure all the other shit out and make it happen,” he tells me, pressing his forehead tight to mine.

“Troj, this has to stay between us. Just for now, and there’s something else I need to talk to you about. I’m not like the girls at the cl—” His pointer finger crushes over my lips to silence me.

“I know that, and I told ya, we do this your way. Come to my cabin later and we can talk, okay?”

“My uncle wants me to stay in the village after dark,” I sigh, disappointed.

“D’ya always do what your uncle tells ya?” He links his hand in mine and dips his head lower so his lips press into my neck. It makes my knees feel like they’ll buckle out from under me.

“I guess I could sneak out later,” I whisper.

“Good girl,” his lips speak against my skin and make me shiver.

“Shaniya,” Dyanni shouts out my name like she’s searching for me.

“I got to go,” I tell him, shifting to move back out into the open, but the hand that’s still holding on to mine tugs me back, and I fall back onto his lips again.

“I’ll be seeing you later.” His lips whisper against mine, and my stomach flips at his promise as he releases my hand so I can quickly rush back to the village.

“What were you doing back there?” Dyanni tries looking over my shoulder, but I dance around her, giving Troj the chance to escape undetected.

“I thought I saw one of the baby goats run between the cabins. We still haven’t rounded them all up.”

“Oh Shaniya, you’re such a terrible liar. It’s about time me and you had a talk, and I’m gonna need you to tell me everything.” When I find the courage to look up from my feet, I’m unable to hide my smile.

“You made your choice, I see.” I follow her eye line to where Troj is climbing back up the ladder onto Tayen’s roof, and he winks at us both when he catches us watching him.

“You aren’t allowed to tell anyone, and no judging.”

“Me?” She presses her hand to her chest as if I’ve offended her.

“Yes, you. Now let’s head back to our cabin so I can fill you in.”

I jump up from my couch when my cabin door knocks. Somehow the girl’s got me feeling fucking nervous, and I don’t get nervous, not even before a big fight.
