She walks toward me, and I pull her into my arms. “I should go. I was supposed to meet Cade ten minutes ago.” I brush her lips with mine. “Have a great day.” I lower my voice. “We’ll finish what we started later.”

“Promise?” she whispers back.

I smile. “I promise, baby.”

Telling her I love her is on the tip of my tongue, but I hold back. I want to say the words, but not with Paisley watching. I do love her, though, and Sophie was right. Loving someone who loves you back is completely different to loving someone who never can.

Taylor

After Seb’s said goodbye, I head into the bedroom and quickly get changed into a pair of yoga pants and a top, throwing my bikini and a towel into a bag. When I go back to Paisley in the living room, she smiles.

“It looks like things are going well with you and Seb.”

“Yeah, they are.” There’s hesitation in my voice, and I know by the frown that clouds her face she hears it too.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Tay.”

I sigh. “I just wish he’d open up to me. Turns out he talked to Sophie about us, and she made him realize he wanted to give things a go.”

“And that’s bad?”

“No...” I trail off.

“But?” She pauses. “What aren’t you saying, because you know you can say anything to me.”

“I feel ridiculous even voicing this, but I’m a little jealous. I can’t help but wonder if she knows more about his past relationships than I do. I know they’re friends, and if he opened up to her, then that’s great. I’m glad he had someone to talk about it with.”

“I feel like there’s anotherbutcoming.”

“I love him, Pais. I want him to be able to tell me anything, but he shuts me down whenever I bring up this mystery woman.”

She blows out a breath and sits on the arm of the sofa. “Maybe he just needs a little time.”

“For what? If he’s still hung up on her—”

“He’s not,” she says, cutting me off.

My eyes widen. “How do you know? Do you know more than you’re telling me?”

“No, Tay.” She reaches for my hand. “I know because I see how he is with you. How he can’t take his eyes or his hands off you. He’s not hung up on anyone but you.”

“I hope you’re right,” I whisper.

“This isn’t like what happened with Eddie,” she says, referring to my ex who went back to his previous girlfriend while my mom battled dementia.

I have no idea if this is the same or not. All I know is I was crushed when Eddie left, but I’d be completely devastated if Seb walked away.

I wave my hand and drag in a breath. “Enough about me. We have a bachelorette party to get to.”

I take her hand and pull her toward the door. She pulls back and I stop, looking over my shoulder at her.

“Talk to him, Taylor. He’d hate that you’re feeling like this.”

I nod, knowing she’s right. Despite me wanting him to be able to tell me anything, I’m just not sure how to even start this conversation with him when I know it’s not something he wants to talk about. I don’t want to push him away by demanding he tells me everything from his past. Maybe Paisley’s right and he needs some time. I’ll have to be patient and respect that.
