We get back to the rental, giggling like two teenagers, and Gauge is waiting outside with his arms folded across his chest. His composure is rigid and instantly, I’m on high alert.

“What is it?” I ask.

“Josephine got a delivery today,” he says with a nod to follow him. Chase sits at the bench with Punk next to him. A flower arrangement of orchids sits between them. I recognize them as theFlor de Mayo, or the national flower of Colombia. Chase hands me the note that came with them.

Que te mejores, mami.

My heart turns to ice and I crumple the letter in my fist.

“What’s it say?” Josephine asks.

“Feel better, little lady,” I mutter, pulling her close to me. She doesn’t ask who it’s from. We both know.

Josephine gulps in lung-fulls of air, her body trembles, and her beautiful blue eyes bulge with fear. I hold her tighter to calm her down when her body seizes in a panic attack, cooing words of reassurance in her ear to help Josephine regain her composure.

Esteban Moreno is still a threat. I will need to finish our feud and soon.
