“You’re a fucking liar, Candy. The president isn’t going to be happy when he hears you’re spreading lies about him,” I threaten.

Candy huffs and hustles past us, slamming the front door on her way out to the party. The three of us start cracking up.

“Damn, girl! You’re my new favorite person. That bitch has been overdue for being put in her place,” Ebony cheers.

Opal looks gleeful. “I can’t believe you did that.”

I shrug. “She had it coming when she attacked you. She lied about Maceo to me. She could easily be lying about Gauge to you.” I don’t say any more because I don’t want to upset her. I don’t want to give her false hope, but she should hear it from Gauge himself.

A throat clears behind me and I turn to see Maceo leaning against the doorjamb to a side door I hadn’t noticed before. He’s grinning from ear to ear.

“You heard all that, didn’t you?” I ask, already knowing he did. He’s puffing out his chest like a proud peacock.

“Atlas, you got one badass bitch,” Ebony clucks.

Maceo saunters into the tiny kitchen to wrap his arms around me. “I most certainly do.”
