“You still have security at your cabin if you’re not there?” I ask, not wasting time.

“Yes, there’s always security there. Why?”

Thank fuck.“Calling in a favor. I need to use the cabin this weekend for myself and my woman.”

“It’s yours. I’ll call ahead and let them know you’ll be arriving. When?”

I look over at my girl who is still bawling. I would rather drive the thirty miles to Loveland in the morning, but she needs this pronto. “Right now.”

“Then enjoy,” he says before hanging up.

I pocket my phone and motion for Josephine to climb on the bike behind me. She does, but I can tell she’s shot. We will have to take the SUV there, which is a shame because I would have loved to take her for a road trip on my bike. I pull out onto the road with half my crew. We make it to the rental, and I escort her to the SUV, setting her inside. She looks at me confused, with a red face and puffy eyes.

“I’ll be right back.” I place a kiss on the end of her ruby nose then run inside the rental.

On a mission now, I make quick work of our bags and haul them out to the SUV. Hades watches from the garage where he has been hanging out with Chase most days when Josephine is working. He whines, worried about being left behind.

I never asked the governor if I could bring a pet, but fuck it, the man owes me big time, and I’m not riding the hog. I whistle for Hades and he pads to my side. After loading our dog and throwing our bags in the SUV, I wait when Gauge approaches.

“Atlas?”

“Tell the men they’re off duty this weekend. Party, get lit up, but stay smart. We’ll be back Sunday evening.”

“Do you need any backup?” he asks, scratching his face and eyeing Opal. He’s already thinking of what he’s going to be doing first.

“Governor has it covered,” is all I say and jut my chin out at Opal. “Go get your girl. Call if anything comes up, otherwise leave us the hell alone.”

“She’s not my girl,” Gauge denies, but we both know he’s lying.

“Right, like Josephine’s not mine, either,” I counter and give him a pointed look. He can lie to everyone else, including Opal, but he can’t lie to me.

Ignoring me, Gauge grins wickedly as he eyes Opal. When he finally turns to me, he nods before leaning in to give me a one arm hug and a slap on the back.

Josephine is eyeing me wearily as I climb in and pull out onto the road. I take her hand and kiss each knuckle. “We’re taking a little vacation,” I say with a playful smile.

“Maceo, I need to work this weekend. I need to finish—” she starts to argue, but I put my finger to her soft, warm lips.

“No, Pixie, you don’t. We’re on high alert for Esteban. FBI is watching him. The governor knows he’s been in the state and the authorities are ready. Lorenzo has his ear to the ground and will alert us immediately if he catches wind of anything in the criminal underworld. Esteban’s not going to do anything with this much heat on him. My men are keeping an eye on everything else. You are ahead on the build. So we can take the weekend to get away from all the crazy shit and enjoy each other. I need you relaxed and at peace before we start next week,” I say simply, running my hand along her thigh.

She shakes her head heatedly and looks out the passenger window. Well, it’s not the reaction I wanted, but at least she’s not crying anymore.

I turn on the radio and stumble across the Killers, Josephine’s favorite. I turn up the volume for her, when it’s loud, she likes to sing along. She thinks I can’t hear her, but I can and I love it. Her voice is the sweetest thing when she lets loose. It’s not long before she’s bopping her head and singing. I stare ahead, grinning like a fool, feeling pretty proud of myself.

Thirty minutes later we’re pulling up to the governor’s cabin. They let us through the gate after I give my name and we cruise right up to the, ahem, cabin. The only thingcabinabout it is the logs. The rest of it is all high-end.

Josephine looks out at it with awe. “This is what you call a cabin?”

I shake my head. “This is what the governor calls a cabin. I call it a mansion.”

Josephine looks up at me with an excited smile. “We’re really staying here this weekend?”

I grab her chin and kiss her plump lips. “You bet your sweet ass we are. And best yet, we have security all over the property, a chef, maid service, all the bells and whistles. There’s a pool out back. Hiking trails right off the property. A little bit of paradise not far from home. I hear there’s a big soaker tub in the master suite, too.”

Josephine’s face lights up like a firework. Enthusiasm bounces in her bright smile and costal blue eyes. She jumps out of the SUV and opens the back door for Hades. I climb out and grab our bags before taking her hand and leading her to the massive front door. Before we can knock, a security guard opens the door and ushers us in.

“Mr. Tabares, welcome. I’m Brian, head of security here. If you need anything, please ask. We hope everything meets your expectations. The master suite is upstairs and to the right. Chef Jordan has prepared you two a spread to help you relax. Please enjoy.”

Brian’s eyes go a little wide when he takes in my pixie. He tries to hide his attraction to her with a quick swallow, but I see it. Even dirty with a tear-stained face, she’s a fucking knockout.
