“It never mattered to them; they accepted me as is.” Maceo turns to me, his throat bobbing. “You were right, Josephine.”

He smiles his first genuine smile of the day.
Brandon’s lips twitch, but he quickly schools his features. “You’ve been responding well with our sessions, but I think you need something in between our appointments when something triggering occurs and you want to recall your current thoughts in the future. I suggest journaling like your father had done, as a way to record your thoughts and feelings. Writing can be extremely therapeutic when you’re overwhelmed. It’s such an easy tool to use. You could type it out on a computer or even buy a journal.”
Maceo slides me a glance, smirking.
Guess that new journal of his was a better idea than I originally intended.
Brandon pulls out his schedule. “Let's set a date for our next session.”
