“I know, it’s outrageous. The MC is trying to cover up their involvement in Olina’s abduction. They’re coming after you because you’re leading the case against them. Don’t worry. We protect our own. This accusation will not get off the ground.”

“I can’t believe this.” Levi breathes, trying to sound panicked as he opens his safe, removing stacks of cash, his gun, fake passports, and other forged documents—for him and Olina. “They’re trying to ruin me, Braun.”

“I know, man. We’ll clear your name. I just couldn’t say nothing and have you walk into the field office completely blindsided.”

Levi hauls his bag out to his attached garage, throwing his stuff into his nondescript sedan. “I appreciate you having my back. I just…I can’t believe this is happening. And worse, I can’t believe anyone would believe it.”

“It’s bullshit, I agree. Trust your fellow feds to shut this down, okay?”

“Okay.”

Levi disconnects, and then he’s moving. He makes several trips from the house to his car, packing his essentials, the case files, his computer, and enough food rations and water to last him a week. Any clue of his connection to Olina is now in his vehicle.

He throws on a ball cap, jeans, and a t-shirt so commonplace no one will remember anything identifiable about him. Later, he’ll grow out a beard, maybe color or shave his head—anything to make it harder to find him.

With his phone now compromised, Levi removes the sim card and snaps it in half. He’ll dispose of it along the journey. With a backup phone already in his possession, Levi leaves the old one behind.

The last thing he does is switch out his license plates. It should be enough to get him the hell out of dodge before dumping his vehicle for another. It pays to hunt criminals. You learn what works and doesn’t in evading authorities.

His timeline for reuniting with Olina has been pushed back. He’s unable to go directly to her. The MC crew will expect him to come at once. He needs to let them sit, marinate into a false sense of security, thinking he has fled and will not return. When that time comes, he will take Olina back.

With everything he needs to disappear, Levi climbs into his car. He slowly drives away into the early morning darkness with one destination in mind.

CHAPTERSIXTY-THREE

GAUGE

June 2021

The past eleven weeks have been a shit show. We couldn’t get eyes on the ground fast enough to stake out Levi’s place before someone from inside the Bureau tipped him off. I raged like a soldier going into battle, furious we weren’t fast enough to track him. He was MIA, and we were shit out of luck.

Opal was beside herself, worried sick about him coming after me. Even when she’s the most in danger, she worries about me. This woman is going to give me diabetes with all her sweetness.

When my words weren’t enough to calm her down, Brandon rushed over to do an immediate counseling session. Between Brandon talking her through her flooded emotions and my constant reassurance, we settled her nerves. It especially helped to reveal our current situation with Levi doesn’t differ from before, but is better, now that the crew is aware of who we’re looking for.

The feds are hunting him as well as us. It’s only a matter of time before Levi’s urges for Opal have him crossing paths with us, and this time we’ll nab the fucker.

To brighten Opal’s mood, I surprise her with the plans for our new home and her bakery. She squealed with giddiness, jumped in my arms, and attacked me with kisses. It didn’t make the situation with Levi better, but it reminded her we’re moving forward with our lives.

With a wedding to plan, home decorating ideas, offering baked goods to local restaurants, and considering culinary school, Opal is busying herself to keep her mind off Levi. It also helped that the crew was home after a successful mission in Argentina, and the twins had finally arrived.

Burns my gut knowing the creep is still at large, and I hate having to limit Opal’s access to the outside world. She may be fine staying behind closed doors, but I’m not. I want her to feel safe enough to go outside, walk the compound’s grounds, or go shopping with the other MC women. It’s not like she’s ever left unattended by one of my brothers or myself. Yet, when I mention us leaving headquarters for an outing, Opal doubles down, stating she doesn’t feel secure enough to leave.

When I mentioned it to Atlas, he joked about microchipping her the way we had implanted a GPS in Atlas on our last mission in Argentina. It’s what saved his life—without it, we might not have ever been able to track him to Esteban Moreno when Atlas switched places with Jo.

The look of intrigue on my face made Atlas stop laughing. “You can’t be serious?”

I shrugged. “It’s another level of security.”

“It’s your funeral, bro. No way in hell would Josephine let me track her outside of her phone.”

“Maybe there’s another way to have it on her without actually implanting it under her skin?”

A call to Piero Bianchi put us in contact with his tech specialist. By the end of the day, I had a GPS-embedded charm bracelet wrapped around Opal’s wrist. Upon examining it, no one would ever know the charms hold a GPS chip along with comms connecting it to our computer servers back at headquarters. It’s like a souped-up ear comm, but way more stylish and useful.

Yes, I told her it was a tracking bracelet, and she was more than keen to wear it. It’s another example of how terrified she is of Levi getting his hands on her. Opal’s normal meter is clearly broken if she’d rather give up her privacy by wearing a tracking device if it could save her from her abuser.

All was fine until Flay approached me with the gnarly looking implant gun. I was ready to throw hands.
