“Don’t.” I shake my head at Gauge. Levi will kill Gauge if he gives up his gun. I know it. I’d rather die than watch him hurt Gauge.

Levi tuts his tongue, jabbing the gun harder against my skull. “Don’t encourage him, Olina.”

“Stop,” Gauge snaps, holding his gun up in surrender. “I’ll give you my gun. Just don’t hurt her.” He gently tosses his gun off to the side before raising his hands. “This wasn’t her fault. Don’t take it out on her. You were right when you said we were holding her captive.”

“Gauge!” Why is he saying this?

“She never wanted to be with me,” he continues, ignoring my protest. “Don’t punish her on account of me.”

I can feel Levi’s smugness as his lips press against my temple, where his gun was seconds before. “Did you want to come back to me, Olina?”

No. No, no, no!

“She did,” Gauge insists, a heaviness in his tone. “All she did was talk about you, about how much she missed you. She fainted that day out on the road when she saw you because she thought she was being rescued. But you weren’t there to rescue her. You abandoned her, leaving her with me.”

Levi stiffens. “I didn’t want to leave her.” He roughly turns me to face him, putting me face-to-face with the vilest man I’ve ever encountered. His hair has grown out since I last saw him, dyed black, probably to disguise his identity.

“I shouldn’t have taken off,” he coos. “I should’ve shot that biker dead who was with you and pulled you into my car. But I’m here now. We can finally be together.”

Something in Levi’s demeanor twists, causing his face to cloud over. “If you wanted to be with me, why did you report me for child molestation? Why did you agree to marry a filthy biker?”

Petrified, I attempt to shrink away, but he’s gripping me against him.

“We forced her to report you. The club wanted to keep her. We thought we could use the young relationship she had with you against you to take the heat off us holding her hostage,” Gauge answers quickly, lying with such ease. “She never agreed to marry me. Look, she won’t even wear the ring.”

Levi braves a quick peek at my ring finger. He closes his eyes for a brief second, seeming to relish in this false information. “I knew you wouldn’t turn me in willingly, nor marry trash. But you ran away from me, Olina. Over five years, I’ve had to be without you. Five goddamn years! Why did you run?”

“Are you fucking serious?” Gauge scoffs. “And you’re supposed to be an FBI agent? Are you telling me you never figured out the real reason she ran away?”

Levi’s attention snaps back to Gauge. “What are you going on about?”

Gauge won’t look at me, even though my eyes are pleading for him to. I want to understand what he’s doing. He shakes his head, then says, “Your girl ran off when her mother discovered you two were hooking up behind her back. She caught you together—stupid move betting on her never finding you in her daughter’s bed. Shelly Allred threatened to report you for statutory rape if Olina didn’t run off and leave you all to herself. Olina was trying to protect you.”

He’s feeding false information to Levi, trying to throw him off and catch him off guard. We’re in a tight spot. Our chances of us getting out of this are slim. He doesn’t care about himself, only me. Levi will kill Gauge, but he’s buying me time for the crew to track me when Levi makes a run with me.

Levi’s mouth drops, gaping like a fish out of water. His eyes swing back to mine. “Is this true?”

I nod, knowing if I don’t play along, Gauge could get hurt.

Baffled, Levi blinks, relief softening his face. “It all makes sense. You never wanted to leave me—you were forced. By that fucking jealous bitch.”

He seethes, clutching me tightly. “If I hadn’t already killed Shelly, I’d fucking do it all over again, but slower.”

His fingers dig into my flesh. I let out a small whimper as the pain pulsates up my arm. He grips my chin in one hand, tilting my face toward his.

“I should have known you’d never leave me. You’re my good girl,” he murmurs tenderly, making my skin crawl. It takes everything in me to not flinch when his lips crash harshly against mine, molding to mine in ways I had hoped to never experience again.

The kiss ends as quickly as it started. Levi smiles widely, loosening his hold. “We need to hit the road. Start the life we should have had years ago. But first, we have unfinished business to attend to. Pick up the piece of shit’s gun.”

Huh? Why?Does he want me to shoot Gauge? “I—I—I don’t want to.”

Levi’s smile slips, and his old dominant persona emerges. “Pick up the gun.”

“We can just leave him,” I beg, tears clouding my vision.

Levi gets close to my face, breathing in my ear. “Olina. Pick. Up. The. Gun.”

Gauge’s eyes burn a hole in the side of my head. I know he doesn’t want me to set Levi off, but I can’t. I won’t hurt Gauge.
