“I can’t believe it!” Harlow squealed, immediately dancing around the room.

“Shush. You’ll wake the sleeping princess,” I told her, unable to keep a smile from my face.

“The Golden can sleep through anything,” she huffed then blew me a kiss. I’d never seen anyone so happy about getting two contracts.

Okay, so they were major contracts, both putting the firm on the map. However, I knew part of her delight was rubbing it in her ex-boss’s nose that we’d stolen two contracts out from under him. She was one mischievous woman and the dude had been stupid to lose her.

The spoils of war.

I laughed as I took a sip of my drink, enjoying just watching her. My fiancée. It kind of had a nice ring to it. I wasn’t certain what I’d do with having three females in the house, but it would be a hell of a lot of fun trying.

As she waved her glass of champagne around, dancing in time to the music, I shifted my thoughts to what she’d done for me. My initial reaction had been my usual, anger, but she knew me better than I did myself, realizing I needed that peace of mind, or I would never heal.

And I loved her for her tenacity, refusing to give up or in to anyone. Not everything had settled in yet, even after a month from the incident, but I knew my animosity and constantly looking over my shoulder would eventually end.

She suddenly stopped short, heading toward me with something on her mind as usual. “What about this house? We need to get it ready to sell. I know it’s in great condition, but since you don’t like the furniture, you’re going to need to think about whether you want to sell it with the house, as in furnished, or give it away. That would be a nice thing to do, you know. People always need very nice furniture.”

As she prattled on, I took another sip, easing my glass to the table before standing. I took my time walking toward her, adoring the way her breath caught in her throat as I approached. “Sassy. Did anyone ever tell you that you talk too damn much?”

She took an exaggerated breath, allowing a sly smile to cross her face. “Just the most handsome man on this planet.”

“Uh-huh. Careful. Them’s fighting words. The house is already sold.”

“You’re kidding?”

“I made a deal with Frank and Carrie. They wanted to be close to the city during retirement and they certainly didn’t want to stay in the house after what happened. So I made a deal they couldn’t refuse.”

“Which was?” Her tone was as demanding as always.

“Half the price I would get.”

“You didn’t!”

“I did and would be happy to do it again. I have plenty of money.”

“You mean we do.”

I took the glass from her hand, taking my time to place it on the table. Then I yanked her over my shoulder. It was time to reinforce that I was her master.

“What are you doing?” she moaned, pummeling her fists against my back.

“Giving you what you need and what you deserve.”

“Not fair.”

“What did I tell you about life and fairness?”

“You’re a big brute,” she insisted.

“Yup. You got that right.” I closed the bedroom door behind us, placing her onto her feet. Then I yanked at her clothes, able to disrobe her in seconds. “Go grab the new brush you purchased.”

“What? Oh, no.”

“Yes. Now or the punishment will be worse.”

“You’re one mean man.”
