The drinks were slammed onto the table, beer sloshing over the side of the pitcher. “You haven’t waited tables very long. Have you?” I asked, tossing her a hateful look.

She gave me a nasty smile then dropped the menus, one slipping into my lap. “I’ll be back in five minutes. Have your decisions ready.”

“She’s not getting a tip,” I said under my breath.

Savage leaned forward. “Are you always nasty to everyone?”

“Are you always the dark, brooding type?”

“I have my reasons.” His sneer was almost as surly as hers was.

“I do too. Does that make us even?” I wrapped my hand around my glass, studying him intently, allowing my eyes to roam across his tats. As he poured a glass of beer, chugging almost half, I was surprised to see one underneath his forearm.

“You were an Army Ranger?”

He instantly seemed angered, as if I’d invaded his privacy. “I’m a lot of things, Sassy, most of which you wouldn’t like to know about.”

“Why don’t you try me on for size?”Oh, great, Harlow. Why don’t you keep tempting him?

When he leaned forward quickly, I jumped a little, uncertain what he was about to do. My reaction caused him to grin, happy with himself.

“Be very afraid. I’m the big, bad wolf.”

“Uh-huh. I’m sure you are, Savage.”

Our connection had me so charged I felt like I was on cocaine.

“Just stay out of my business.”

“Gladly!” We were tiptoeing around our strange connection, but it was obvious we had nothing in common. A full two minutes passed. “That’s admirable.”

“What?”

“Serving our country in such a dangerous position. Conducting raids and assault missions, going deep inside enemy territory is dangerous. Very few people are willing to put their lives on the line that that. Admirable. Honorable.”

“What the fuck do you think you know?” His surly attitude when I was just trying to make friendly conversation pissed me off.

“You’d be surprised what I know.”

Snickering, he polished off the first glass, immediately reaching for the pitcher. Meanwhile, I’d yet to have a sip. I hid behind the glass, a perfect excuse to allow my eyes to meander down his magnificent torso. He was built like no other man I’d ever known, and we were sitting much too close for comfort.

“Do you always stare at people?”

“Only when they sit like a bump on a log,” I said, squirming in my seat. The mini skirt wasn’t long enough to keep my freshly spanked bottom from sticking to the cheap wood.

“We ain’t friends.”

“No, but it’s customary to talk while having dinner.”

He cocked his head, laughing softly, the different sound pounding vibrations straight into my pussy. “If you’re one of those hopeless romantic types, forget it.”

Why the hell did I give off that kind of vibe? “Do you really think this is romantic?” I asked as I waved my arm from one side to the other. “Think again.”

His snicker did nothing but create solid wave of fury.

“Where are you headed?” I asked, finally gulping down a swallow… of very cheap whiskey, the taste biting.

“No place special.”
