I kept my gait slow as I walked inside. Even the two mechanics on duty backed away as I approached. But as I would have expected, the little woman stood her ground.

“Was she giving you any trouble, boys? My girl can act presumptuous at times. Can’t you, sweet Sassy?”

She twisted her lips, glaring at me. “I was doing just fine before you came along, thank you very much.”

I nodded, trying to keep from grinning as I glanced at the two men. “Was that the truth?”

“She was just trying to dick us down on the price,” one of them said.

“Hmmm… Well, I know you boys would never try and take advantage of a beautiful woman, especially one that really needed your help. Am I right?”

“Of course not,” the second one snorted.

I turned my full attention in her direction. “What did they tell you the price was going to be for towing your car and replacing the alternator?”

“Fifteen hundred dollars,” she snapped and even from where I was sitting, I could tell she’d thrown them a nasty look. I almost didn’t blame her.

“Certainly you must have heard wrong, honey. Maybe more like seven hundred. Right? Six for the parts and labor, which is pretty generous, and a hundred bucks for towing your car. Remember, I mentioned that you really need to pay more attention to your maintenance schedule.”

“Thieves. That’s what they are.” She took a step toward them, fisting her hands. Who did this girl think she was?

I wrapped my hand around her hair, yanking her closer before she took a chunk out of them. “I’m right, boys. Yes? You said seven hundred.”

The first one swallowed then nodded several times. “Yes, sir. And we can get right on it too. Shouldn’t take more than a coupla hours.”

“Excellent. See, honey? You need to listen better. Did you tell them where the car was left?”

Her face turned bright red again. “Shit.”

I lifted a single eyebrow. “Stay right here. I mean here. As in on this spot.” I pointed to the floor and headed toward the mechanics, explaining exactly where the car had been left. Then I turned toward her, giving her a heated look. “Let’s take a little walk. Gentlemen. Do you have a bathroom in this facility?”

“Sure. Right around the corner.”

“Where the hell are you taking me?” Sassy quipped as I grabbed her arm, leading her out of the concrete bay.

“What did you think you were doing?”

“Trying to…” She shielded her eyes from the sun then shook her head. “Solve a problem on my own. I honestly don’t know. I just wasn’t thinking.”

“No, you weren’t. That’s not how you’re supposed to behave, Sassy. I think I need to remind you of a very important lesson.”

“What does that mean?”

“That means you’re coming with me.” I tugged her around the building, heading for the bathroom.

“Oh, no, you don’t.” She managed to jerk away.

I snagged her easily, pulling her onto her toes. “You do believe in right versus wrong. Yes?”

“Of course.”

“So you’re admitting that what you did was wrong?”

“I said I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.”

“No, you weren’t. You should have trusted me.”

“Why? Because we had sex?”
