“I think you’ve learned your lesson. For now.” Winking, he gave me a heated onceover then disappeared as quickly as he’d come.

As I gingerly eased into my chair, wincing immediately, I stared at the ruler.

Was it possible this was the start of a relationship?

Who was I kidding? We didn’t have a relationship of any kind.

We were just fucking.

CHAPTER11

Harlow

Financials.

The numbers were all starting to blur together. The company employed a controller, but the man had nearly bored me to death in explaining the nuances regarding the income and expense sheets. After Savage had asked me to handle making certain they were in order, I’d enmeshed myself in them for well over a day. There were no anomalies that I’d been able to find, other than the income for two of the casinos seemed low. I’d seen a few of the ads. They were high dollar and the contracts should reflect it.

Unless Galen had made a special deal.

I took another look then shifted to the bank reconciliations. There was certainly a lot of money rolling through the accounts on a regular basis. A significant amount of money. I sat back, tapping my pen on the desk. Then I pulled the prior month’s financial statement and compared it to the bank statement. There was something wrong that I couldn’t put my finger on. I had to talk to Savage.

He’d been distracted since leaving my office the morning before but when I’d passed him in the hallway, I’d been able to tell he had something on his mind. I tapped my fingers on the desk, staring at the computer screen. I had access to Galen’s personal drive as did Savage. I doubted he’d spent more than thirty minutes on the computer. In fact, he’d come and gone from the office several times. What the hell was he doing? My thoughts drifted to Lily. Maybe he was spending more time with her.

His life might be in total disarray, but I had a bad feeling Savage needed to spend some quality time going over the records. Something was definitely off but without a full audit, which I hadn’t found a copy of for the previous two years, certain discrepancies would be difficult to find.

He’d said nothing else about the night we’d shared and if he’d noticed I’d rifled through his things, he hadn’t said a word. His discharge continued to nag me, but I knew it had to be a catalyst to why he’d joined a fucking biker gang. I’d even looked up the group he’d mentioned. The Silent Kings were the real deal. They were also considered one of the most dangerous motorcycle clubs in the world. Why in the hell had he mixed himself up with men who were nothing but thugs?

At least I’d gotten the issues with my bank cards straightened out, a new one on the way. I’d need to set up new accounts at a local bank, but there didn’t seem to be enough time.

Sighing, I flipped through the files for a second time on the computer. They were arranged in alphabetical order, date order, color coded, and just about every other way to make access easy and the records quickly identifiable.

Maybe I should be grateful Galen had been detail oriented. A single name drew my attention. Whiskey. I hadn’t noticed the firm had done an ad for anything but a couple of wineries. When I tried to click on it, a security screen came up. Huh. What the hell was this about?

After five minutes of trying to find any other reference, I dialed Jackie’s office. “Jackie. Can you come in here for a minute?”

“Sure thing.”

Maybe it was a just a very private file that had nothing to do with the business. The knock on the door was a welcome relief. “Come in.”

Jackie popped inside, closing the door after her. “What can I do for you?”

“Do we have a deal to advertise for a brand of whiskey?”

She narrowed her eyes as she walked closer. “Not that I know of unless it was a recent acquisition. You should ask the production team leader, Taylor Young, about it. She would know what is in the hopper.”

“Do you have any idea why he’d have a secured file on his computer?”

“I… not really, but Mr. Masters was very private. I know he met with several clients on his own, including the folks from the casinos.”

“I haven’t even gotten to the casinos yet.”

“Two of them are by far our most lucrative contracts, not that the others are insignificant.”

“Long term?”

“I believe so, but Mr. Masters handled all aspects of the contracts as well.”

“I didn’t see the ones for Diamond Skies and Triple Adventure. Do you keep physical copies?”
