“You mean a brutal giant.”

Her purr drove me crazy, my cock twitching. “Mmm… Brutal is right. You might find out just how brutal I can be.”

“I’m game, big boy.”

When I dragged my tongue along the side of her face, she shuddered visibly, her purrs becoming soft moans. The woman had no idea how much she turned me on.

“So am I.”

The moment was heated, but quickly died as reality seemed to hit us both at the same time. I released my hold and she immediately pushed both cups away, wiping her face then glancing toward Lily. “She’s very special.”

“Yes, she is.”

“I think she’s also very troubled. Did she tell you anything about the nightmare?”

“I don’t think she remembered it. She was muttering ‘Daddy’ when I walked in.”

“Don’t let her suffer in silence, Savage. That will hurt her in years to come.”

“Yeah, I know. I figured just getting her into a routine is a good idea.” I studied the little girl as she played with Princess. She was strong but I’d sensed she’d placed a coat of armor around her.

Harlow had a faraway look on her face. “Family is important. I never really understood how much until recently.”

“Meaning what?”

“My mother died a few years ago and it’s been just Pops and me. My father isn’t the touchy-feely type. Never has been. At least he’s softened as he’s gotten older.” Exhaling, she fidgeted with the cup of ice cream until I pressed my hand on hers.

“What’s wrong?”

“My father might have cancer. He’s the kind of man who will wait until the last minute to tell me if he’s ill. Too proud. Too much of a pain in the ass.” She wrinkled her brow as she glanced in my direction. “Like someone else I know.”

“I got that from my father.”

“Hmmm… Are you close?”

The laugh that formed in my throat had a bitter taste just like everything else associated with the man. “Never.”

“There are always difficulties in every family,” she mused. “You’ve been distracted the last day or so. What’s going on?”

I slowly turned my head in her direction. “You don’t need to be bothered with it.”

“That’s not fair, especially with the deal we made.” There was no twinkle in her eyes, no look of mischief. She was taking the situation as seriously as I was.

“As you said, there are always issues in every family.”

“Savage. You need someone to talk to. That’s obvious.”

Sighing, I thought about her request. Maybe she was right, although I hated to admit it.

“I think my brother was murdered, his wife was as well, although I doubt either murder will ever be vindicated.”

“What?” She pulled away, taking several shallow breaths. “You’re serious.”

“Unfortunately, I am. I can’t prove it yet, but I’m working on it.”

“This has something to do with the Azzurri Crime Syndicate, doesn’t it?”

“Don’t go poking around, Sassy. I mean it. They’re dangerous people.”
