“What’s going on?” Frank immediately stood.

“I don’t know exactly but Savage wants us to leave.”

Frank shot his wife a look then nodded. “We can take our SUV. There’s enough room.”

“I’ll get Lily ready.” I was shaking, terror digging into me.

Frank left the room and both Carrie and I heard noise.

“Don’t worry. Frank knows his way around weapons. We’ll be okay and we have a place to go,” she told me, although there was trepidation in her voice.

Nodding, I rushed into the living room, noticing Frank was peering out the front blinds.

“Too late,” he growled. “They’re already here.”

No. No! I tried to think of what we could do. Even though Frank was already holding a weapon in his hand, I doubted we could fend off however many men Michael had sent. “Is there anywhere I can hide Lily and the puppy?”

“The attic,” Carrie said from behind me. “They’ll be safe there. You can’t tell we have one. Come on, I’ll help you get them upstairs.”

“Go!” Frank barked. “I can hold them off.”

Oh, God. Did Savage understand what we were about to face? What could he do about it? I was almost paralyzed but as soon as Carrie touched my arm, I flew into action, moving quickly into the small guest bedroom. As I roused the little girl, she tried to push me away.

“No,” she whimpered.

“Come on, honey. We’re going to play a game.”

Princess barked only once, immediately crouching over Lily.

“You too, Princess. Let’s go.” I gently eased her from under the covers, my throat tightening as the fear crept into every cell and muscle. I had to keep going, never thinking about the monsters waiting outside.

“A game?” she asked.

“That’s right.”

Thank God she didn’t fight me, sleepy enough she allowed me to take her into the hallway, following Carrie to another room. She was quick in her actions as if Frank had forced them to plan for the possibility of being attacked. After pulling down the attic stairs, she flipped a switch.

“Come on. There are a few supplies and blankets. It’s soundproofed so if Princess barks, no one will hear.” She tried to smile but there was no doubt she was as terrified as I was.

I didn’t waste time, clamoring up the stairs. The area wasn’t stuffy as I’d thought it would be, air rolling through the surprisingly large space. “Okay, baby girl. You’re going to need to stay up here with Princess until I come get you.”

“Why?”

“Like I told you, it’s a game. If you can stay up here without coming down for a whole hour, then you get a treat. I know you love treats.” I was winging it, trying to remain calm when I was about ready to jump out of my skin.

She wrinkled her nose as she looked around. “O-tay. But it better be a big treat.”

I patted Princess, giving the pup a look. “You take care of her.”

Woof!

I backed away, blowing Lily a kiss. “I’ll be back before you know it.”

Lily stared at me then immediately turned toward one of the trunks. As I headed down the stairs, a lump still in my throat, I knew that I would have no issue doing whatever was necessary in order to keep her safe.

“I have a weapon, but you should go stay with Lily.”

Carrie laughed halfheartedly. “Not a chance. No one is going to threaten us.”
