“Danger junkie.”

He lifted his eyebrow. “That’s everyone in the military, but I’m serious. Since I’m here, you can use me as a sounding board if you need, within limitations. I know.”

There was no way of providing information without breaching my duty of honor, let alone my loyalty to the United States government. “Thanks. I appreciate that. I don’t like being placed in a middle of a game and that’s the way I’m feeling.”

“Hmmm… About this woman? If you’re protecting her, I’ll guess it’s under the guise of a secretive operation. You don’t need to confirm or deny. Does anyone know you’re here?”

“No one. That’s why I brought her to the island.”

“But you’re worried this… game will follow you.”

“I’m damn glad I never had to face you in a court of law.” We both laughed, but I could tell his wheels were spinning.

“I’d be happy to help if I could.”

“I’m not sure you can. I just wanted your caretaker to know I was here.” I took a sip of my drink, surprisingly relaxed.

“This woman must be special to have someone with your qualifications protecting her. Please don’t tell me she’s some celebrity.”

“Nope. A veterinarian.”

“Wow. Is she a hundred years old?”

“What the hell?” I snarked. “You trying to set me up, Jameson?” He’d done just that when I’d been required to go to New York to sign papers before the man jetted off to some foreign country.

“Nope. Just curious.”

“No, she’s young and spectacular.”

He shook his head. “Who knows. Maybe I’ll get to meet her one day.”

I didn’t need to tell him that wasn’t going to happen. “How long are you here for?”

“A couple weeks, maybe longer. Sandy got the house.”

“Shit.”

“At least I can work from here for a few weeks until I decide. We’ll see after that. Maybe it’s best if you don’t like this girl you’re harboring. It’s all fire and passion for a few months. Then it becomes like the Antarctic.” He shook his head. “I’m still thawing out.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. Do you mind if I purchase a few items while I’m here?”

“Purchase? Hell, let me get you a couple months’ supply. We have some prized beef this year.”

“I have plenty of money, Jameson.”

“Yeah?” he asked before getting to his feet. “So do I. The less money I have, the less Sandy will get to fund her skimpy bikini collection. Come with me. Bring your drink. We’re not done talking.” He walked into the library then stopped, waiting until I’d walked inside. “You know enough about me to know I’ll have your back if you need assistance. In fact, if you give me some notice, I’ll be happy to get a few other friends on the island, if you know what I mean.”

I did. His offer was appreciated.

He had a way about him that made me feel comfortable. Given he’d honed his skills in the Marines as a sharpshooter, he knew exactly what kind of mission I was on. In a bind, I could no doubt use his services.

I only hoped it wouldn’t come to that. Two against an army didn’t make for much better odds.
