The past week had been sheer hell and I couldn’t stand the thought of being without her for another minute. I studied her intently, the ache in my system more intense than it had been before. I felt like I was losing her.

I refused to push her under any circumstances. But damn it, my cock was aching like a son of a bitch.

She eased my finger from her mouth, pressing her hand over mine. “That tasted incredible.”

“Good chocolate.”

“I wasn’t talking about the cake.”

Grabbing a napkin, she wiped her mouth, and I could tell the lightness she’d experienced was already being cut off. She acted as if she didn’t deserve to be happy. She’d refused to talk to her mother, only allowing a short call with her father. I’d been forced to find that out from Broderick given I couldn’t be seen with her. We weren’t supposed to be together now, but I’d selected a quaint little seafood restaurant I’d been to a few times, arriving separately. Fortunately, no one had paid us any attention.

I’d even rented a hotel room close by, hoping to rekindle what had been little more than a forbidden fantasy. A part of me knew I should walk away, allowing her to return to her life, but there were things left unsaid, answers we both needed, and the investigation would pull us together over the next several months.

“Have you spoken with Jameson?” she asked.

“Yeah, I called him. He’s fine. He’s out of the hospital and back on the farm. He told me Kalani is doing just fine and that the family wants to thank you personally.”

Her face lit up for a few seconds. “I’m glad. What about the other men who were on the beach? I saw your helicopter get blown to bits.”

She’d already told me every detail of what happened after I’d been knocked out, the way she’d fought to free herself even as we were dumped onto a boat, taken to the yacht and into Castillo’s helicopter, but I knew she was trying to process all that had happened.

“I’ll never forget seeing the blast and hearing the asshole laugh. Then he kicked you several times. I managed to get off several punches. I don’t think I told you that,” she said absently, finally laughing as she looked at me.

I shook my head. “My beautiful, ballsy woman. Only one of the men died, the pilot. The others managed to survive, getting help.”

“How did your people find us in Brazil? You must tell me that. I deserve at least to know how you managed to save our lives again.”

“Well, there are tracking systems that can’t be discovered.”

Squinting, she thought about what I was saying. “You ingested it? That’s what was in the little plastic box I found in your pocket.”

“You were snooping.”

She shrugged, feigning innocence. “When a girl needs to find out about her man, she will do anything to make that happen.”

Her man. Now my cock was shoved against my trousers. As she licked her lips provocatively, I almost lost it, jerking her into the bathroom to have my way with her.

“I’ll have to keep that in mind. You are such a bad girl. I think you need a hard spanking.”

“Nope. Not me.” She laughed again but a shadow fell across her face. “So many people died. I’m sorry about the pilot getting killed and Jameson hurt. So much blood.”

“I know, but that’s what happens in a time of war. Jameson told them what they were getting themselves into before accepting his plea for help. They served alongside him in the Marines.”

“Soldiers stick together.”

“Most of the time.”

Willow frowned. “What does that mean?”

I shifted my thoughts to my godson. I’d found out he and his mother were living in Arlington where the girl’s family was from. I’d picked up the phone twice to call her and hadn’t been able to. “It means that I haven’t been a very good friend to someone who was very important to me.”

“This is the reason for your survivor’s guilt. Isn’t it?”

Groaning, I leaned across the table, tweaking her nose. “You’re far too intelligent.”

“Trust me, Santiago, as much as I do you.”

“My buddy found out he was going to become a father just before my last mission. He was so excited and asked me to be his little boy’s godfather. I was hesitant but accepted. He never got a chance to meet his newborn.”
