“What are you talking about?” she asked innocently.

I jumped into the Jeep, trying to keep from laughing. “There seems to be a little problem with the fact you’re into snooping into other people’s things.”

A warm flush crept up her cheeks. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

As I started the engine, I took a deep breath. “So you’re telling me that you didn’t break into my private room in the cellar?”

She pressed her hand against her lips, the blush turning into a full shade of crimson. “I would never do that.”

“Uh-huh. I know better. It’s long past time you received a hard spanking.”

“That’s not fair.” As soon as she said the words, she knew what to expect, mimicking my response as I said it.

“Who said life is fair?”

She grumbled under her breath, refusing to look at me. All I could do was smile.

“I was thinking,” I said as we neared the house.

“I’m afraid to ask.”

“How would you like to own a veterinary clinic in Hawaii?”

“Here?” she asked as she turned her head in my direction.

“No, silly girl. On one of the islands.”

As I glanced over, she rolled her eyes. “Beautiful thought. I don’t have the money, contrary to what you think. And I’m not taking anything from my parents.”

“But I do and I intend on spending every penny. We could buy a little place near its location then come here on the weekends.”

She seemed stunned, so quiet I wasn’t certain she heard me. When I glanced again, I noticed tears were rolling down her cheeks. “Does that mean you want to… I mean that we’re… Hell, I don’t know what I mean.”

I grasped her hand as I weaved my way through the trees, pulling to a stop in front of the house. “It means that I’d like to spend the rest of my life with you, if you can tolerate a brutal savage in your bed every night.”

“Ugh. I did call you that, didn’t I?”

“That and a few other things.”

After unfastening her seatbelt, she took my hand into hers. “All I could think about during those two months was what you were doing and how you were. I can’t imagine spending another day without you in my life.”

“Excellent.” My heart was pounding. “That means you’ll obey me, following my every command.”

“We’ll see about that.” As she climbed out, her face beaming, she stopped only a few seconds later, turning toward me. “What was that?”

Woof!

“What are you talking about?”

“That.”

I shrugged and shoved the keys into my pocket. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I waited outside as she raced toward the door, finding it unlocked. Only after she rushed inside did I follow, barely able to hold my shit together as she dropped to her knees in front of the cage. It had been a huge coordination to get the Golden Retriever puppy to the island, but Jameson had a few friends in all the right places.

As soon as she opened the small door, squealing like a little girl, the puppy jumped into her arms.

“Oh, my. You’re so adorable. I love you to death,” she said, giggling.

Woof. Woof!
