“You might be surprised.”

After he tossed his suitcase into the back and climbed in, he said nothing until I started the engine. Then his words gave me hope.

“I wanted to call him so many times, but I thought he’d hang up on me.”

“You just need to talk.”

“Yeah, we’ll see what he thinks about it. He’s stubborn.”

I gave him a look. “I have a feeling you’re exactly alike.”

He laughed, the sound easing a weight from my shoulders.

Manuel remained quiet but I could tell he was enjoying the scenery, shocked when I had to make a detour around a flock of sheep. As I pulled through to the clearing, I sensed he’d stiffened.

“He was spearfishing when I left.”

“Spearfishing?” he asked, startled when MacGyver raced around the corner, immediately jumping into his arms.

“He likes you. Once he licks you then you belong here.”

His laugh was genuine. “That gives me a good feeling,” he said as the pup furiously licked his face.

“Why don’t you go around back. I’ll get your suitcase.”

“Maybe you should leave it there. I might be taking the next flight out.”

I gave him a look. “That means you have a week to wait.”

He shook his head and eased Mac to the ground. “I can see why my brother adores you.”

I watched as he headed around the side of the house, MacGyver racing behind him. It was possible that Santiago would be angry with me, but it was worth the risk if it meant they had to get their disagreements out in the open.

After five minutes, I couldn’t wait any longer, heading through the house and peering out the open kitchen window.

I’d been a girl who’d had everything growing up, except a strong family unit. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed having that until the moment when I saw the two rugged brothers hugging.

Tears formed in my eyes, my heart finally full. When they backed away from each other, they were still talking. Then Santiago turned his head in my direction. And even though there were several yards between us, I could still read his lips.

I love you…

The End
