I realize I’m not being fair to her. She has no idea how our circumstances have changed. “Layla?” I hold out my palm, and she stares at it. “Would you like to go out on a date with me Friday night?”
Her eyes widen so quickly it’s almost comical. “What?”
I smile, still holding out my hand. “Will you go out with me?”
She’s staring at me like she doesn’t trust her own ears. “Do you mean on a date-date? Like a real date?”
I bite back a smile, because I need to take this seriously. “Yes, a real date.”
“But my parents—”
“Actually, they’d be fine with it.”
“What are you talking about?”
“After dinner, your dad told me that he and your mom would be fine if we started dating.”
Her eyes widen. “Are you serious?”
When I nod, she ever so slowly places her hand in mine. I curl my fingers around hers and draw her hand to my lips to kiss it.
Abruptly, she looks away and shakes her head. “No. Stop. He is not.”
“I’m not what?” I ask her.
“Lying to me.”
“No, honey. I’m not lying to you. It about killed me tonight when I drove you to a restaurant so you could meet another man for dinner. I wanted to punch him in the face. Reese did me a favor when he disrespected you, because he gave me an excuse to chase him off.” I squeeze her hand. “Jealousy was eating me alive.”
She still looks skeptical, cautious, probably because the monster is feeding her loads of bullshit.
“Layla?”
“Hmm?”
“Can I kiss you?”
The breath leaves her lungs in a rush, and she actually starts shaking.Yes.Her lips form the word, but no sound comes out.
“Was that a yes?”
She nods.
“Because I really need to be sure. I need you to say the word.”
“Yes,” she says, this time in a clear voice. “I want you to kiss me.”

Time stands still as my gaze locks on Jason’s mouth. He has beautiful lips, and right now the corners are tilting up. He’s smiling.At me.I have to seriously question whether or not I’m hallucinating.
