“Why, thank you. We should get back out there before people realize we’re gone,” Jada says, and I agree.

The two of us fix our clothes so we don’t look like people who just fucked in a storage closet and then exited it. Luckily for us, everyone’s too busy staring at someone in a pale pink Playboy bunny costume who just walked in through the front door. But Hammer’s looking like he’s going to have a stroke.

“Fuck, Oakleigh’s wearing that,” Jada groans, and I put the pieces together. This has to be Hammer’s daughter.

I laugh, and Jada looks over at me. “He told us earlier if we so much as stared at her, he’d cut our fuckin’ eyes out. And he expects no one to look at her? This is fuckin’ hysterical.”

Jada cocks a brow at me.

“Don’t you go gettin’ jealous. My eyes are on you, munchkin. I’m talkin’ about the unspoken for men in the club.”

Jada’s lips curl into a smile, and then she heads over to the girl. I stick back for a minute while the two women chat, and then Jada goes up to the bar. Oakleigh speaks to her father and Shiloh, and then they’re off speaking with other members of the club.

I go get another beer while I watch Jada from afar, but two masked men coming into the club causes my attention to be pulled away. They open fire on Oakleigh, and it happens in an instant. I’m pulling my gun out, and so is Breaker, shooting back at the bastards who dared to open fire in our home.

The next thing I know, a piercing scream is ringing out, and it’s coming from Jada. It’s like my entire world stops. Was she hurt? Is she okay? My eyes go from her to Oakleigh, who’s lying on the ground as people rush out the front doors, trying to get out of the bar. They’re fucking stupid going the same way the shooters just did, but not everyone can have a damn brain, I guess.

Jada runs over to Oakleigh, drops to the ground on her knees, and I look to Breaker, who’s about to have a coronary.

This was the 17. Never did I think they’d do something this drastic on the day this rumor began floating around. For fuck’s sake, we all spoke about it this morning.

These bastards are going to pay for what they’ve done. This isn’t just about planting a rat in our club anymore. They came after us in our home and hurt an innocent bystander. Only this isn’t just a random woman. This is Hammer’s daughter, and it makes it that much worse.

CHAPTERSEVEN

Jada

In a matter of minutes, we all went from having the time of our lives to absolute mayhem.

A loud, piercing scream echoes through the clubhouse, and it’s only when I close my mouth that I realize the scream is coming from me.

I can’t be seeing what I think I’m seeing.

This shit can’t be happening . . . one of my greatest fears come to life.

I run over to Oakleigh as she stares at me with a look of complete shock on her face. I catch her just before she falls. The sexy bunny costume that she has on has a small hole right in the center where her stomach is, and there’s red blooming out like a sick, twisted flower.

I lay her flat on the ground and hear the sound of people running around behind me, screaming for her.

“Jada, what happened? Oh my god, what happened?” my niece says, still in shock.

I press down as hard as I can on the wound in her stomach, trying to staunch some of the blood, but it’s just bubbling up between my fingers.

“You’re okay. Everything is okay, baby girl. Don’t you worry,” I tell her and pray that I’m not lying to her right now.

In the midst of my fear, anger races through my body. This is supposed to be a safe place for her. As far as I’m concerned, this is supposed to be theoneplace where I know everything is going to be okay for everyone. This shit isn’t supposed to be happening, especially not in the club.

Hammer comes sliding up beside me and places his hands on top of mine, helping me to stop the bleeding as he says, “No, no, no. Oh, god, no!”.

“Dad. I don’t want to die. Oh, I’m scared, Daddy.” Oakleigh starts hyperventilating, and tears spill down her face as fast as they fall down mine as well. I’ll never get this image out of my head. When she speaks, I feel like I’m being hit by a lightning bolt, and every single word I hear from her mouth makes my body feel like it’s on fire.

“There’s no need to worry, baby.” Hammer comforts Oakleigh by telling her, “I’m going to take care of you.” Despite Hammer’s best efforts, I can tell my brother’s in considerable fear by the way his hands shake.

The girl we are talking about right now is his little girl. This is the little girl that he just found out about not too long ago. It was only when she was eighteen years old that she came walking into his life.

“Breaker!” Hammer yells, but Breaker is already barking out orders, telling Chains to get the car. I would offer to call the ambulance, but I know there’s no way in hell we’re going to sit around and wait for them to come. We need to get her to the hospital as soon as possible. She’s losing so much blood.

“I didn’t see it. I didn’t know,” Oakleigh starts to say. I can already tell she’s going to start blaming herself for something that she had no control over.
