“I’m Karmen. I just moved here from the midwest. Divorcee, my oldest kid, is nineteen and in college, but of course, no one cares about that. I came here for a new life, and I’m looking for a new man to be with it.”

“I don’t blame you. I just moved here from Montana,” Jada tells her, and Karmen smiles lightly.

“I’m from Idaho. It’s nice to meet you, Jada. Can I get your number, and maybe we can hang out sometime?” Karmen asks, and Jada nods.

For a while, Jada chats with Karmen, and I’m busy with the dinner rush as they begin to pour in. After about an hour, Karmen leaves, and Jada tells me she has plans to go out to dinner with her next week. I think it’s really nice she offered to even give her number out and go out with Karmen in the first place.

“You know anyone single in the club who might be interested in her?” Jada asks me, and I think about it for a few seconds.

“Killer is the only one I can think about off the top of my head. He’s around her age. I could maybe bring something up after you get to know her better.” I’m not going to do it now. It won’t be helpful, especially since we don’t know if this woman is crazy or anything yet. But I’ll let Jada get a feel for her first.

“Cool. So, did you hear the good news?”

I narrow my brows at her. “No, what news?”

“Sunny had the baby. It’s a boy. They named him Hayden,” Jada tells me, and I’m happy for both of them. Hayden will be the third son that Ice has ever had. He has Breaker, but I think he has another son too . . . but for all I know, that son could be Sunny’s kid. I have a hard time keeping track of all the people Ice has had kids with. Fuck, me saying that is horrible. Most of his children are dead. Jesus, I’m a fucking asshole.

My phone buzzes in my back pocket, and I see it’s Otis. I click on the message and read it.

From: Otis

Yo man. Got the address for another associate you might want to meet.

I immediately text him back.

To: Otis

Cool. Send it over. They wanna meet up tonight or what?

From: Otis

Yeah. He’s down to meet you tonight.

To: Otis

Sounds good. What time?

From: Otis

8 p.m. on the dot. He’s a stickler about being on time.

To: Otis

Got it. I’ll be there.

Jada looks down at my phone and gives me a warning glance. I know what she’s thinking, that it’s risky, but I have to keep going down this path. “I’ll be careful, just like I always am.” She still doesn’t stop staring at me the way she is, but I know if our roles were reversed, I’d be concerned about her safety as well.

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

Jada

Time seems to be moving at an unearthly crawl. When Armor told me that he was going out for a run, I figured it was only going to take a little while, but he’s been gone for hours already. As much as I don’t want to, I’m starting to get worried. I know this comes with the territory, but it’s still hard to get used to.

I’m trying not to stress it too much, but he’s probably out trying to clear his head, which is exactly what I should be doing right now.

I grab the remote off the side table and flip on the TV. I pass through the channels in a flash, nothing reaching out and grabbing my attention. I like the feeling of being in Armor’s room while he’s not here. His smell and presence keep me somewhat calm. The fact that everyone now knows that he and I are together has made everything so much easier for us.

I thought for sure that my brother was going to have a coronary, but I’m happy that he’s finally coming around to the idea.
