Journal entry: We don’t cry to Taylor Swift songs anymore. We slash tires to Olivia Rodrigo songs instead.

“What is it with you today?”Macy asks as she sets her sweaty body next to mine on the bus after the game. We won, barely.

“I lost my journal.” The good news is, I never wrote my name in it, or anything to give away my identity or who I was writing about, but still.

Macy raises her eyebrows in alarm. “The journal?”

“The journal.”

“Shit,” she whispers.

“I know. Not only that, but I checked my grades today and I’m failing government.” I throw my head back into the seat.

“Girl.” She looks at me all disappointed in a way only Macy can. “Government is an easy class. How are you failing?”

I groan. “I hate it. I hate the class so much. It’s so stupid. I don’t need it.”

“You do if you want to graduate. Maybe ask for extra credit?” she offers.

I laugh. “Yeah right, that man has given me more detention than I’ve ever gotten in my life.”

We both look down as my phone goes off. A text from Jake. I toss my phone in my bag without opening the message.

“You and Jake still fighting?” Macy asks.

“Yeah, he won’t tell me where he’s always disappearing to and, like, what the fuck, you know? I don’t want to be in a relationship that has zero grounds for trust.”

“No, I get it completely.”

I sigh, resting my head on Macy’s shoulder. “Can I just lay my head here for a while?”

“Yeah, babe. Whatever you need,” she says, petting my head.

“You’re the best, Macy.”

“I know.” She says it with such conviction I laugh a little. “Now, take a nap, Callum. It’s a long way home and I am tired as fuck too.”

When we getoff the bus, Jake is waiting for me. A huge bouquet of white and pink roses in his hands. I won’t lie, I do melt a little. How could I not? I walk to him, my mask of indifference firmly in place. When I reach him, he pokes out his lip a bit. “Come on, babe. Don’t be mad at me.”

I cross my arms. I’m exhausted from the game, this is the last thing I want to do. All I really want to do is go home, take a shower, and pass out. But, honestly, I need to do this. I need to stop being childish by ignoring him.

“Where did you go?” I ask.

His brow furrows in confusion, roses falling with his arms to the side of his body. “What?”

“Where did you go the night we went out?”Or any other party we’ve gone to.He always just… disappears.

“Oh.” He breaks eye contact with me for a split second. “When I get drunk, I like to go on adventures.”

I raise my eyebrows, because what kind of excuse is that? “Hmm.”

He throws his arm out that holds the roses. “I got these for you.”

I take them, bringing the fresh-cut flowers to my nose, inhaling their scent. “Don’t change the subject.”

“When I get drunk, I like to go explore.” He shrugs.
