He looks up, eyes daring me as he types something without looking.

Lincoln: Oh, look. It says here you have a three-hour detention with me after school.

I roll my eyes.

Lincoln: Watch those eyes.

My body tightens with need at his words, at what he may do if I disobey him.

Callum: That’s an abuse of power.

Lincoln: Try me.

I look up, setting my phone down and grabbing my journal. I flip it open to a clean page and begin writing, smirking as I feel his watchful eyes on me. When I finish, I set my pen down, grabbing my red lipstick. My eyes melt into his as I put my lipstick on slowly, making a big show of it. I close the lid on my lipstick, then picking up my journal I lay a kiss on the freshly written page. Smirking, I flip him off. His eyes narrow as he grabs his phone. Mine buzzing a second later.

Lincoln: You definitely have detention now, Miss Madison.

My attention breaks from the message on my screen when Jake leans in, whispering in my ear, “Whatever foreplay that just was, I want some of it.”

I laugh, pushing him away. “You lost your chance.” Grabbing my book, I open to chapter twenty-four and begin reading.

I didn’t have detention, but I did have a grumpy teacher demanding I show up to his house for dinner. Which got me out of having a heart-to-heart with Richard who said he wanted totalk.Screw that, I’ll take the brooding, sexy teacher who is sitting across from me right now. It seems like he’s trying to saw his plate in half with the way he cuts his steak, but I don’t mention it.

“How was your day, Doll Face?”

I smile. “Great. I’m going to meet my boyfriend after this.”

He sighs, elbows resting on the table. “Please, do not test me, Callum.”

“Fine, my day’s been horrible. I have this ache some bastard gave me throbbing between my thighs, and he refuses to fix it.”

He nods. “That’s what I like to hear. Thisbastardwon’t be fixing it either. So, I’d try to cheer up about it.” He bites into his steak, chewing slowly as he watches me. He swallows. “How was your Sunday? Did you miss me?”

He’s so arrogant, but something in me shifts. A sadness I want to confide in him about. “It was…” I clear my throat, wiping my mouth with a napkin. “I saw my dad.”

He pauses, taking a drink then setting it down. “I thought you didn’t know your dad.”

I bite my lip, breaking eye contact. “I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s fucked. The whole situation.” I sigh.

“Explain.”

“My dad has always been in my life but at the same time, he hasn’t. My mom is, well, was his mistress. He has always come over and showered her with attention.” My lip quivers and he’s right there, lifting me and setting me in his lap. I didn’t even hear him move over here. And somehow the nice gesture makes everything hurt more. “He makes me call him by his first name. He’s never even given me a hug. Fucked, right?” I sniff, laying my head into his strong chest. “I have brothers, three of them, but he won’t let me meet them—or he wouldn’t before. Now that his wife has been gone for a couple years, he wants us to all be one big happy family but I…” I trail off.

Lincoln runs his fingers through my hair, soothing me. “He doesn’t deserve you. No one truly does, Callum.”

I laugh. “That’s nice but not true.”

He stills, tipping my chin up to look at him. He looks between my eyes, trailing down to my lips. And I think, maybe, this is when he’ll finally kiss me, shower me with love instead of fucked-up torture, but instead, he says, “Don’t let anyone question your worth.”

“How can I trust someone who only wants to torture me with sexual pleasure? Who degrades me at every chance possible?”

He frowns, thumb swiping over the curve of my cheek. “I do that because I can’t resist you, not because I want to hurt you. You walked into my classroom, starving for affection. I took one look into your eyes and knew pain was your pleasure. Don’t try to devalue my words with fake modest and act like you don’t love everything I give you.”
