Page 42 of Reckless Conduct

He sighs as he closes the door, locking it. He turns to me, eyes back on fire as he stares at me. “Come here.”

My eyes well with impending tears. If she does tell and I’m caught, I’ll be expelled. My life ruined. No college. I walk to him, body shaking from fear. He wraps his arms around me, loosening the belt until it falls away from me. He cups my cheek, lifting it until my eyes meet his. “I lied.”

“What?” I ask, confused.

“There’s no way I can let you go.” And then, he kisses me. Evaporating all my fear and doubts away. I break from him, trailing my lips over the collar of his white shirt, imprinting my mark there.

“That’s reckless, Doll Face.”

But I didn’t care. Because I know I wouldn’t be able to let him go either.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Fall break is finally here. You can tell the kids are about to be let out for a week simply by the restlessness and excited energy they present. I didn’t even bother teaching today. Knowing it would be futile and they’d absorb none of it. So, I gave all my classes a free period. Even let them talk among themselves, which is what my last period of the day is doing. By far the worst class yet. The excitement is too much for their small brains to handle. But if I see one more paper airplane fly across my room, I swear to God, I’m making them write sentences.

I take my narrowed eyes off the juniors, catching and holding my attention on my TA. “Miss Madison.”

Her head snaps up from her journal, my curiosity piqued to see what’s inside. “Yes, Mr. Boyd?” We’ve done a lot of fucking. Sneaking around campus during odd times of the day to do so. To build up the fear factor her teenage heart desires.

“Come here, please.” She looks around the room, sliding her journal in her bag and walking to me. She wears tight dark jeans, the bottoms open and straight, white Converse on her delicate feet. A white off-the-shoulder sweater that’s tucked in the front, showing off her Gucci belt. It’s the most relaxed I’ve seen her. I’ve stopped demanding that she only wears skirts and dresses for me. And no matter what she wears, I find myself wanting to bend her over my desk. Fuck, everything about her from her personality down to her shoes is like foreplay.

She stands at my desk, nude nails tapping the stack of papers. “What are you doing for fall break?”

“Um.” She looks around the room to make sure no one is looking. She knows the game we’re playing is dangerous, but the delicious thrill of it all makes it that much more exciting. “I’m staying home. My mom and her… boyfriend are going on vacation.”

I tap my red pen on my desk, growing amused when she glares at it. “I want you to pack a bag for the week.”

Her eyes shoot up, widening. “Why?”

“Because we’re going away.”

A small smile breaks across her lips, and she bites down to keep it from releasing. “Okay, Lincoln,” she whispers.

I lean in closer, grinning as I lightly tug on the sleeve of her sweater. “Go sit down, Miss Madison. Before I get us both kicked out.”

She laughs lightly, turning to go back to her seat. Yeah, it’s reckless. Stupid. Showing a lack of intelligence on my part, but I don’t always want to be behind closed doors. I want to take her out. Show her things; show her off. I want to be in a normal relationship for the first time in my life. And Callum Madison is the only one I want that with.

* * *

We’ve been drivingfor a couple of hours now. She’s been drawn to the scenery, pointing out small things she finds fascinating. Like the yellow mailbox we saw a couple of towns back. I’ll admit, it’s rare. She fell in love with it while I somehow found myself pissed off by the cheeriness of it. “I’m so going to have one someday,” she whispered to no one.

I turn down an isolated road, the trees so dense it makes it look like we’re going down a dark tunnel. “I think I’ve seen this road in a movie once,” she says.

“Yeah?”

She nods, turning to face me. “Yeah, in a horror movie. No one ever found the body. Good plan. No one will be looking for me for at least five days.”

“That’s good to know,” I muse.

I watch the trees, the leaves orange and candy apple red. Not quite ready to fall but they’re getting there. The trees lighten and I hear a gasp when we come to the rock house at the end of the road. It’s not huge like my home, but it’s spacious. I turn to look at her, to find her face washed in awe, eyes huge and twinkling. The appreciation making her mouth slightly parted.

“Wow,” she whispers. “Is this where we are staying?”

I put the car in park, killing the engine. “You like it?”

“Love it,” she gushes, pushing the door open and jumping out. I hear her grunt a little, not being used to my truck’s height. I don’t use it a lot, but for this trip it was needed.

I jump out, opening the back door to retrieve our bags. I only brought one; she, however, has four. I don’t even know why she would need so many. The air is crisp, smelling of cedar and fresh grass. She bounces around the side of the trunk, a harsh reminder of her age, of our ten-year age gap, but when she looks up to me, smiling, I couldn’t give two fucks about how many years are between us. “Let’s go,” I say.
