“Excuse me?” I turn in his direction.

“I said who is that? Why is she here?”

“This is Ella, she’s my girlfriend. She was with me when mom called me.” I answer, trying to keep the level of respect I usually show my father up.

“Ella? The fucking paparazzi!” My father yells and takes a menacing step in her direction. I take a step back to get in his way so he can’t get to her.

“She’s not working and she’s not paparazzi, I already told you that. She’s a journalist.” I do my best to defend her.

“Percival, how do you not see what’s going on? What magical pussy does she have to blind you so badly?”

“Percival!” My mother gasps out in my father’s direction.

“She hasn’t blinded me to anything. She’s not the fucking devil you’re trying to turn her into and nothing you say is going to make me believe she is.” My hands ball into fists at my sides. The red’s coming back to my vision as my father tries to rip Ella down.

“No, of course you won’t believe it. She hasn’t shown you who she really is yet. I bet she’s been everything you’ve ever wanted. Understanding. Patient. Enthusiastic. She really cares about you and your passions, I bet. She’s willing to wait for you and take things at your pace. She’ll do anything to be in your life, then once she has the story of her life she’s going to fucking drop you like a bad habit. Or better yet if she doesn’t she’s going to get knocked up just so she can leech off you for the rest of her life. Do you want to end up in the same situation as I am with Ian? She’ll destroy you the same way Ian’s mother tried to destroy me.” His eyes bore into mine. I’m so focused on my father, trying to keep myself from beating up on him the same way that Ian did I almost missed the sound of the door click behind me.

When I turn around, Ella’s gone. She must be waiting for me in the car. I can’t say I blame her for wanting to get away from all this drama.

“Let her go son. I promise you it’s better in the long run.” My father’s voice softens and it pushes me further into my fury. I stalk towards him and instantly he can see that I’m not on the same page as he is.

“Where the fuck do you get off trying to tell me what to do with my life? You’re the one who destroyed your life. Not mom, not Ian, not Ian’s mother. You. You thought you could get away with anything just because of who you are and what status you hold. I’m not going to fall in the same trap as you, because I know what I have with Ella. If she blesses me with a child I’m going to love it. I’m going to scream to everyone who will listen how much I love the kid. I’d never treat my flesh and blood the way you treat Ian. You don’t know what’s best for me. Furthermore I don’t really think you care what’s best for me. All I think you care about is your fucking name and which elite circles you can get into with it. Always pure as snow, and right as rain? Our family legacy was tarnished long before you found out about Ian. Our family legacy went to shit the second we started worrying about who we could impress more than the way we fucking treat people.” My breathing is coming fast and my father is staring at me with his jaw clenched tight.

“Percival, son, I think that’s enough for tonight. Go home and get some rest.” My mother softly steps in between me and my father and kisses me on the cheek. I look in her eyes and I see so much pain and disappointment. It only makes me want to throttle my father even more. “Please.” She begs me.

I sigh and take a step back, “Of course mother. I’ll call to check on you guys tomorrow.” I shoot daggers at my father before I soften my gaze and look down at my mother. When the both of them turn to walk upstairs I leave taking in a big gulp of fresh air when I get out of the house. I do my best to shake off the tension that I feel, but I know for sure that it’s not going to happen any time soon. What started out as a wonderful night has quickly turned into a fucking nightmare.

My breath catches when I look over to my car and I don’t see Ella inside of it. Where did she go? Did she leave? When she walked out did that mean she was breaking up with me?

My stomach lurches up into my throat as I run to my car and peel out of my parents driveway in search of my woman.

Something tells me this nightmare is only going to get worse.

My entire bodyhurts from how angry I am. I’ve never hated someone so quickly in my life. Percy Sr. knows nothing about me besides my name and occupation. That’s all he needed to know to judge me and find me unworthy of his son. His son, who just stood there and let him rip his brother to shreds for no other reason than just being alive. I know Percy’s always going to be concerned about his reputation, but how long before he becomes like his father? I could never stand by and be a part of that.

I hurry along the side road and am surprised when I see the back of Ian. He’s standing at the corner just as a cab pulls up.

“Ian!” I call out for him and he turns around in surprise. I rush to catch up to him. “Hey.”

“What do you want?” he squints his eyes at me in suspicion.

“Can we share a cab?” I ask him and give him a tentative smirk.

“What the hell do you want to share a cab with me for? Didn’t you hear, I’m the reject.”

“Well, I guess that makes the both of us. Look, I don’t know what the hell your father’s problem is. I don’t care about anything, but who you are. You seem cool and I wouldn’t mind if we were friends.” I shrug.

“What about Percy? He’s going to be mad if he knows you were talking to me.” Ian says letting a little bit of the anger that he’s holding go.

“Right now Percy can sit on a flaming pine cone and I really wouldn’t care. Besides, Percy doesn’t control who I’m friends with, and the sooner he realizes that the sooner we can move on from it. So what do you say, friend? Can we share a cab?” I gesture to the car behind him. The driver’s already making impatient noises in the front seat.

“Sure, whatever.” Ian laughs and slides in letting me get in behind him.
