"Yeah, she'll be here to chaperone the physical part of the visit. I need you to undress from the waist down and sit forward on the bed." He gives her the instruction very abruptly, and the woman gives him a short nod.

I'm not privy to everyone who comes in and out of here, but I know an uncomfortable woman when I see one. I wait for a second to see what he's going to do but when he only turns his back to enter notes on the computer I walk over to where she is and close the curtain after giving her a paper sheet to drape over her lap. She smiles at me and I return the gesture tenderly.

Dr. Dracos shoots me an annoyed look, but just turns back to the computer screen.

While the patient is undressing. I make quick work of setting up the rolling examination table with the tools he needs minus the speculum which is stored under the patient table.

I grab a few packets of lube and hold them in my palm to warm them up. I'm set up by the time Dr. Dracos gets up from the computer and walks back over in the direction of the patient. He reaches for the drape without giving her any heads-up that he's coming in. I grab it, holding it closed before he can pull it open. His eyebrows cinch in, and I can see the muscles on the side of his jaw ticking in frustration.

"Ma'am, you ready for us?" I call out.

"Um, one second, please." She says, and I stare right back at the insensitive doctor.

He may be the big bad wolf to everyone else, but I've made puppies out of a wolf or two in my day.

When the patient calls over to say that she's ready, I let go of the drape, and he rips it open, causing the young woman to startle.

He doesn't say another word to her besides to scoot closer to the edge and put her feet in the stirrups. He's efficient, thoroughly but professionally checking over her outer genital area before he reaches down for the speculum and lube. I watch in shock when he tears open a pack of cold lube to use on the speculum. I grab the speculum out of his hand before he has a chance and use the warm jelly I have in my hands to set it up for him.

"Nurse, you do realize I'm quite capable of using the resources I need on my own. I didn't ask you for-"

I put my hand up to stop his tiff and he shuts up instantly.

"We have a patient here, Dr. Dracos, I believe it's wise that we focus all of our attention on her." I turn away from him and smile at the woman on the bed who is clearly holding in a laugh. She visibly relaxes but Dr. Dracos tenses right up.

Even in his angry state, he's still gentle and efficient with the patient. It doesn't take long for him to finish up and explain to her that we'll get the samples to the lab and barring no unusual findings, she can come back in two years for her next one.

I work quickly getting the samples properly labeled and in the correct specimen bags while the patient gets dressed and Dr. Dracos works on his note, which is taking him a lot longer than usual.

Faster than both of us, the woman is dressed, says her thanks and is out the door.

I leave the samples on the side counter where Ardi can get to them to send off to the lab, and start for the door myself.

"Nurse, a moment." Dr. Dracos snaps out before I have a chance to open the door.

I stand still and clasp my hands behind my back. He closes out his note on the computer and stands in front of me, his hands crossed over his chest.

I can tell by the way he's clenching up his muscles that this chat we're about to have is meant to put me in my place.

I'm ready for it, in fact, I welcome it. I'm not one to back down from a challenge. I know I've done nothing wrong but give that woman exceptional patient care.

"Your name please?" He asks.

"Nyla Thimble” I reply just as quickly.

"Wonderful, Nurse Thimble. I understand that this is your first day with us at Grand River, but I don't need hand holding. I know how to complete a pap smear and take care of my patients. I'm the one in the room with the medical degree..." He bites out, and I cut him off before he can boast himself up even more.

"True, but I'm the one in the room with the common sense."

He visibly startles and his mouth drops open slightly.

I continue my argument which only takes more air out of his tyrannical sails, "If you were paying any attention to the patient and not to just what the chart said you would have noticed how uncomfortable she was. This job, your job, Doctor, is not just to see the problem on the paper and fix it. Your job is to deliver patient care. That's physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, to the best of your capacity. That is what I did this afternoon, and I will not compromise my work ethic because you're too much of a donkey's rear end to figure it out yourself."

By the time I'm finished talking, Dr. Dracos is staring at me with a red face and his mouth hanging wide open. Absolutely speechless.

I take a step back and gesture over my shoulder to the samples, "Now that we've gotten that out of the way. All the samples have been properly labeled and placed in the correct specimen bags. I don't have access to the system yet, but Ardi is aware and will be sending them out to the lab right away. Do you need anything else, Doctor?" I ask professionally.

He clears his throat and shakes the shocked look off his face.
