"Mayor, silly! Now is the perfect time, right at the edge of your heroic display. The news will be buzzing!" She says and I shake my head disgusted.

I don't want to be mayor. She never even asked me if I was interested in politics. I slide the folder across the table, "I'm not doing that." I say.

"Nic! I know what's best for you. You're a leader. The people of this town listen to you" She sighs and comes over to squeeze my shoulder, "Just think it over. You'll see it's the right thing to do. What do you say?" She asks me, hopeful.

I look down at the scattered sheets, all of my choices seeming to float away in the wind. "Alright mom. I'll fill it out."

"Good boy! Get it done quick, okay." She kisses my forehead and flits out of the room, leaving me sitting there staring at the papers.

My father sighs slightly, and I look up at him.

I stare at him, and he stares right back at me. Usually, my father doesn't have to say much to get his point across but right now, I don't need the strong sheriff, I need my fucking dad.

"Are you even going to say anything?"

"What is there for me to say, Nic?" He tilts his head and takes another sip of his drink.

Did he not just witness what happened? Sometimes I feel like my father lives in his own world.

"I don't know what you're supposed to say, dad. Help me. Give me some guidance."

I'm thirty-eight years old, a decorated physician, and I'm still coming to my father for the answers.

He keeps my gaze for another second. "You want guidance?" He asks, and I nod my head earnestly.

"Okay, here's my advice. Stop being a fucking pussy."

My mouth drops open, and I choke on my own spit. "What?" I sputter out.

He puts his glass down, uncrosses his legs and leans forward in his chair before he continues.

"Nic, do you know the story about your great-grandfather? He came over here with barely anything in his pocket and became the cornerstone of this town. Built it up from nothing. No one wanted him here. Everyone tried to tell him what he needed to be doing, but he knew what he wanted, and he went for it. Your grandfather built that hospital you're working at and no one wanted him to, he knew what he wanted, and he went for it. I wanted to expand my family and my town, I knew what I wanted, and I went for it. You are over here bending over backwards for your mother, your ex-wife, the town and everyone else in between for what? So, they respect you? I can't tell you how to be the man you want to be. One thing I can tell you is they’ll respect a lion more than they will a gazelle. You want that woman, go get her. If you want to be liked, you’re on the right track."

He raises an eyebrow before he leans back and picks up his glass again.

I'm dumbfounded.

I can't believe my father just said that to me. I can't believe it, but I hear him. It might not be the easiest thing in the world to do, but I know what I feel right now. I know what I want, and it's Nyla.

I'm going to do whatever I have to do to get her back.

nyla

This is for the best.

It's become my personal mantra for the past week, even though everything inside of me feels like I'm dying

I made my way down to Texas, trying to get as far away from Nic as possible. I just didn't want anything around me that could remind me of what I was leaving behind.

It is for the best, though.

"Hey, sweetheart, are you sure you're okay? It can get pretty busy in here. If you need some time to rest, we'll understand."

Nurse Applegate is the charge nurse here at the new hospital I'm working at and even though she's as sweet as pie I'm having a hard time connecting with her.

In fact, I'm having a hard time doing anything. I can't eat, I can't sleep, all I'm able to do is cry and think about Nic.
