"Am I sure, what?"

"Are you sure you can hook up with him, and do whatever, and not fall for him? I mean, if you were in love with him when—”

"I wasn't really in love with him. I was a teenager. I just had a huge crush, you know, and that's all it was."

"Are you sure? Because I was in love with Oliver years ago and I was still in love with him when I came back here to see him, you know? I just don't want you to lie to yourself, if—”

"I don't know how I feel, Alice," I said, my voice cracking slightly. "I don't know that I really know what it is to be in love. I'm not really looking to fall for someone who's not looking to be a hundred percent committed to me. Your brother, well, he's committed to his job and to having fun. That's not what I want. I like him, and I'd love to have fun with him and just do whatever. But it seems like he's not even open to that."

"Are you sure?" she said softly.

"I'm pretty sure I got it. So I just wanted you to know because, obviously, I'm still going to be looking for a boyfriend, and a job, and all that good stuff. But just in case Foster and I do have a moment here or there…" I grinned. "Well, I don't want you to think it's just coming out of nowhere."

"Hey," she said. "I get it. I totally get it. And for what it's worth, I hope Foster comes to his senses and gives you a real shot. You deserve it, and he deserves it. As much as my big brother gets on my nerves, I would love for you to be my real-life sister, so I'm going to say a little prayer that it works out."

"Well, there's nothing to work out right now because—”

"I know," she said, "but life is funny. Things can change in an instant."

"That is true," I said. I picked up my wineglass, and she picked up hers. We clinked glasses. "Cheers," I said. "Cheers to us both."

Chapter23

Foster

"I'm looking forward to seeing you and your friends and family at the dinner tonight." Travis stood next to my door.

"Yeah. I'm looking forward to the event as well. I think it should be a good time."

"I think so." He nodded. "Looks like we're on track to raise a hundred and fifty K for the nonprofit."

"That's amazing."

"And then we'll bring even more at the silent auction. You will be bidding on something, I take it, Foster?"

"Yeah, I think so." I nodded.

"And have you given any more thought to my offer? We're really going to need an answer sometime next week before I ask the next candidate."

"Sure. I should be able to let you know next week."

"If you don't mind me asking, why are you hesitating in accepting?"

"Well, as I said before, my sister just moved to the city. Her best friend is living with me, and she doesn't really know anyone else. It's just a lot to consider."

"And the best friend is coming tonight?"

"Yeah. My sister Rosalie, her best friend Alice, Oliver who you've met before, and a new friend Molly."

"Wow, you're just meeting a lot of women these days."

"Well, one of those women is my sister, and the other is her best friend who I've known for years."

"You keep mentioning the best friend. What's her name again?"

"Alice."

"And Alice is single?"
