“I know. You said you like me, and yay, I like you too, but—”

“But like I said, we’re going to create some new rules.”

“What are the new rules that you want, Travis?”

“I want us to be more than just friends with benefits. I want…”

“You want what?”

“I want us to date. I want people to know.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. No one’s going to respect me. I’ve barely been working for you for a week.”

“And?” he said, raising an eyebrow. “Do you think anyone’s going to question me? I am the boss.”

“Yeah, you’re the boss. It’s going to be fine for you. They’re going to be like, ‘Ooh, look, Travis got himself a sexy little—’”

He cut me off. “A sexy little…?”

“You know what I mean.”

“I mean, I agree you are sexy, but I didn’t think I’d hear you calling yourself that.”

I glared at him. “I don’t want people being like, ‘Oh, yay. Lucky Travis Covington. He’s got himself a sexy new side piece assistant.’ And then when things go belly up with us, they’re like, ‘Oh, Travis got rid of his sexy side piece.’ And then I can’t get a job because everyone just thinks I got it because I was lying on my back with my legs in the air.”

“You’ve only had your legs in the air a couple of times. I seem to recall that you like—”

“Travis, this is not about sexual positions. This is just about me garnering respect in the workplace.”

“Okay, and that’s because you really, really want to be in finance?”

“What does that mean?”

“It means if you could do anything you wanted to do in the world, would you want to be a broker or a financial advisor?”

“No. But how many people at your office could say that’s their dream job?”

He nodded. “And what would your dream job be if you could do anything you wanted?”

“Why are you asking me this? I feel like it’s a trick question.”

He shook his head. “It’s not a trick question, but maybe if the hold-up here is because you don’t want people thinking you succeeded in the finance world because you’re my hot little side piece assistant, maybe you don’t need to be my assistant.”

“You see, this is what I mean. You already want to fire me. Why? Because of some sex and because I was flirting with a hot guy?”

“Now he’s hot.”

“You know he’s hot.”

“He looked like a vampire.”

“He didn’t look like a vampire. He looked like—”

“He looked like he’d never seen the sun before.”

I folded my arms and glared at him. “Really, Travis?”

“What? I mean, how can you go from me to him?”
