Chapter 6

“So I can’t believewe’re starting next week.”

Alice looked at me happily as we sipped our cappuccinos.

“Are you excited, Molly?”

“Oh yeah.” I nodded. “I’m super excited.”

I bit down on my lower lip. All I could think about was the email we’d received from HR. Each one of us would also be assigned as an assistant to someone at the company, and I was nervous that I might become Travis Covington’s assistant. I mean, I thought it was very unlikely that he’d choose me, and seeing as he was the boss, he’d have the final say, but I just didn’t know what to think.

“So have you spoken to Travis since the charity event?” Alice asked me, a curious expression in her eyes.

“No. Why’d you ask?” I said, shaking my head quickly.

“No reason. You guys just seemed to get along, and I was wondering if, you know…” She smiled, and I looked horrified.

“Oh, he was a jerk. I mean, yeah, he was good looking, and he’s obviously rich,” I said quickly, “but he just really thinks a lot of himself.”

“Oh, wow. I didn’t realize you guys had had such an intense conversation at the charity event.”

“Yeah, well, we did,” I said, feeling guilty.

I wanted to tell her that we’d actually had a date and a one-night stand with a blow-up the following morning, but I didn’t want Alice to think less of me. I didn’t need her to worry about how my work experience would go. I was going to keep it a secret. That was the best thing I could do in this situation.

“So you want to go for drinks tonight?” she asked me. “Seeing as we’re working next week, this might be one of the last times we can go for drinks during the week.”

“Really?” I said, laughing. “Why do you say that?”

“Because we’ll have to wake up early for work.”

She smiled, and I started laughing then. “Oh, honey, I go out drinking during the week all the time. Job or no job. How else are we going to meet fantastic men and enjoy our youth?”

“True,” she said, “but I don’t know how Foster will feel about me going out multiple times a week.”

“Oh yeah.” I wrinkled my nose. “I forgot you have a boyfriend now.”

“Yeah. He’s kind of wonderful. He’s a good-looking guy and definitely seems to adore you.” I nodded, thinking about the times I’d seen them together. “You’re lucky. But I mean, he’s even luckier.”

“Aw, thanks so much, Molly. And how’s your dating going?” she asked. “Have you been on any blind dates recently or to any more speed-dating events?”

“No.” I started shaking my head. “I might sign up for another app or something, see how it goes.”

“Yeah. You deserve to meet a good guy.”

“Yeah, I do,” I said, finishing my drink.

“And who knows? Maybe you’ll meet someone at Covington.”

“Oh, I don’t know that I want to shit where I eat,” I said. “Or, you know, have sex with someone I’m working with.”

“Yeah,” Alice said, looking a bit glum, and then I remembered Foster worked at Covington as well.

“I mean, Foster’s already your boyfriend,” I said quickly. “So that’s not a big deal.”

“Yeah.” Alice sighed. “I mean, he is my boyfriend, but I don’t want anyone to think there was nepotism in me getting the job, especially seeing as I’m going to be his assistant.”

“Yeah. I’m just worried that people are going to think I got the job because I know you, seeing as I don’t really know much about finance or…”
