“Exactly. And all my neighbors can hear everything I talk about.” As if on cue, the sounds of the TV coming from Mrs. Ross’s apartment next door started blasting through the thin wall.

“Aren’t you nervous to see him for the first time since that night?”

“No, I haven’t spoken to him since that night. I mean, aside from the text messages I sent the next night. But those were his fault because he messaged me first, and …” I paused and waited for my friend to speak.

“Oh shit. That’s going to be super awkward then, isn’t it?” she said, sounding slightly nervous for me.

“What do you mean?” I said sharply, looking at my reflection in the mirror.

“I mean, you slept with your boss. And then you told him off when you left. And then you sent him some rude messages.”

“I was drunk! They were drunk texts; they don’t count,” I explained.

“Well, does he know you were drunk?”

“I think he has to. They were sent almost at midnight.”

“Okay, so you sent drunk texts, and you haven’t seen him since?”

“I haven’t seen him. I haven’t heard from him. Nothing,” I said quickly.

“So what are you going to do when you see him for the first time?” she asked.

“I’m going to pretend he doesn’t exist,” I said vehemently, “because he really doesn’t. Yes, he might be the CEO of the company I’m about to start working at, but he’s just a figurehead. I’ll pretend I’ve never seen him before in my life. I will pretend I’ve never seen him naked. I’ve never kissed him. I’ve never swallowed his salty milkshake.”

“Ohhh,” my friend groaned, “I never want to hear those words again. That is absolutely disgusting.”

“At the time, it was sexy.” I giggled. “But, oh my gosh, I’ve got to go. I’m already late, and I look a hot mess, and … Please, dear God, don’t let me see him.”

“I’m praying for you, girl,” she said. “Good luck. You call me as soon as you get off. Okay?”

“I will,” I said and hung up quickly.

I didn’t look as good as I wanted to look on my first day, but I was already going to be late. I didn’t want to be super late. I don’t want to get fired on my first day.

Plus, I knew that Alice would be so disappointed in me. We’d both been so excited about this job; and maybe I wouldn’t see Travis. I mean, what CEO was hanging around with the lowly new hires in a company? It wasn’t like I just gotten a job as a director on the board. I was literally joining the training program. I was the bottom rung.

Yeah, I’d be an assistant to someone in the company, but it was very unlikely I’d be Travis’s assistant. I mean, he wouldn’t want that, and I certainly wouldn’t want that, and I didn’t have the expertise. My résumé sure showed that.

I sighed and grabbed my handbag and headed to the door. I was done. I would have to put my lipstick on as I walked down the street. And I had hoped that for some reason, the first meeting started late. I decided to give Alice a call so she wouldn’t be worried when I wasn’t there on time.

“Hey, girl,” she said cheerfully. I smiled into the phone. Foster really must have been giving it to her good because she sounded happier than I’d ever heard her before.

“Hey. Oh my gosh, my alarm didn’t go off, and …”

“Oh no. Did you just wake up?” Alice sounded saddened.

“No, but I just left my apartment. I’m going to be late. Could you cover for me with HR?”

“Of course. How long will it take you to get here?”

“I think about twenty minutes,” I said. “I shouldn’t be super late, but I don’t want them to think I’m not taking this job seriously.”

“Don’t worry, girl. I’ve got you,” Alice said. “And I’m excited to see you. I can’t wait to find out who you’ll be assisting.”

“Me too,” I said. Though the truth of the matter was I’d be happy as long as it wasn’t Travis Covington.

“Okay. See you soon, girl.”
