“Molly,” the voice said, louder this time.

I couldn’t pretend I didn’t hear it now. I stopped and looked around. “Oh, Mr. Covington. Hello,” I said with a polite smile on my face, pretending this was the first time we’d had a one-on-one conversation just in case anyone was paying attention to us.

“You can call me Travis.”

“Oh, so nice to meet you, Mr. Covington,” I said again. “I’m so excited to be starting here today.” I smiled at him. It was a sweet, innocent smile that didn’t give away the fact that I’d had his cock and balls in my mouth just a week before.

“Really, Molly?” he said, his voice lowering now.

“Sorry, what, sir? I was just going to get a coffee. Would you like me to get you one as well?”

He stared at me for a couple of seconds and shook his head. “I’m fine. Thank you. I’ll see you back in the conference room.”

“Oh, of course, sir. I’m so excited to learn more about Covington and Associates and to hear who I’ll be placed with. This is such a great opportunity.”

“Really?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes. It’s a…”

“It’s an even better opportunity than your studio apartment?”

“What do you mean, sir?” I tried to laugh and pretend I didn’t know what he was talking about.

“I thought your studio apartment had all that honey that was bringing all the boys.”

I swallowed hard and licked my lips. “Sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Enjoy your coffee,” he said with a small smile. “I’m sorry to say that we don’t have any milkshakes in the cafeteria today.”

“What?” My face went red.

“We do have salt, though,” he said, licking his lips.

“Well, thank you, sir.” I glared at him. “Have a nice day.”

I turned around quickly and hurried away. The nerve of him to bring up salty milkshakes and honey at the office. He hadn’t called or texted me in the last week. I thought he would pretend it never happened like I was. I mean, what if the HR lady found out? She didn’t seem the sort of person who would understand that we had a one-night stand that was sexy and fun, that had ended badly because of his poor sense of humor and my sensitivity.

I bit down on my lower lip. I needed to take a chill pill. I really did. This job was going to pay me a lot of money, and it was going to allow me to prove myself to my family that I didn’t need them. That I could get ahead just by myself. I was a month away from having to go back to San Francisco with my tail between my legs. I had barely any money. I was not surviving. This job had to work. I had to make it. I needed to focus more when I got back into the room. I needed to know the difference between mutual funds and ETFs and bonds and whatever else they threw at me.

Because if I was going to make it at Covington and Associates, I would have to become a financial guru. I was going to have to become such a wiz at numbers that I could impress everyone in the office, and I knew that the information that I had now was not going to impress anyone.

I had to stop thinking about Travis. I had to stop worrying that other people would find out. I’d gotten through our first meeting. It hadn’t been so bad. I could work here. I could do it. I could forget I knew what it was like to have Travis Covington inside me. I knew what it was like to have this warm, silky skin next to mine. What it was like to run my fingers through his hair.

I licked my lips. I wasn’t going to remember that too much because I didn’t want to crave it again. I wasn’t going to let myself go down that road again. Travis Covington was the sort of man who I couldn’t stand. He was powerful and rich and handsome, and he thought he could have his way with any woman he wanted, including me. Well, yes, he’d had me once. Well, maybe two or three times, but it wasn’t going to happen again. I wasn’t going to let him think that I, Molly Malone, was his for the taking whenever he wanted. No, I was an independent woman, and I was going to show him that he was not Mr. Perfect.

Chapter 9

“So you andFoster look really loved up,” I teased Alice as we sat back down at the conference table and waited for the HR lady to continue with her talk.

“I love him so much,” she said with a small smile. “And I’m hoping we’ll get along working together because he’s a bossy boots, and it gets on my nerves…” She leaned back and giggled. “But we’ll see. I think he’ll be great. I can bring him to his knees.”

“And at least you’ll be able to figure out your communication style so that when you guys have kids…”

“Kids?” she said. “I mean, we’re not having kids anytime soon.”

“I’m not saying you’ll have them next month, Alice. I’m saying when you do have kids, you’ll already know how you deal with lots of different situations. So that shouldn’t be an issue.”

“I guess so,” she said, smiling. “So out of all the investors and managers we’ve met, is there anyone you would like to be paired up with?” she asked me curiously.
