“But nothing. I should go,” I said, jumping up.

“No. No.” He touched my arm. “Don’t leave. We still haven’t had our date.”

“Yeah, but this feels weird. I mean, maybe we could just pretend we never met and start again normally.”

“But we have met, and you’ll be working for my company soon.”

“I know, but…” I sighed. “It’s not really professional for me to date someone who owns the company I’m going to be working for.” Especially because my skill set really shouldn’t have gotten me the job, but I wasn’t about to add that part.

“You’re going to be part of the apprenticeship program.” He shrugged. “I don’t really have much to do with that, so…” He gave me a look that told me, “I’m the head of the company. I don’t deal with the nobodies.”

“But you’re still my boss.”

“You’ll have several bosses.” He grinned. “And hey, wouldn’t most women want to sleep with the boss?”

“Not that I know of. I think that’s considered sexual harassment.”

“Sexual harassment, eh?” He raised an eyebrow. “Not your boss yet, so…” He shrugged. “Also, I can rescind the offer if you would prefer that.”

“No,” I said quickly. “I really need this job.”

“Okay, then. So why don’t we go for a drink?”

“A drink? Somewhere else?”

“Well, obviously, this bar isn’t working for you,” he said, grinning at me. “I mean, I thought it was really forward and cool of you to suggest we role-play on our first date, but—”

“It’s not a date,” I said quickly, “and I wasn’t trying to role-play.” I groaned. “Look, I was so drunk last night I don’t even know what I was saying or doing.”

“But you did agree to a date with me, right?”

“I guess. I mean, you’re really handsome.”

“I know,” he said, laughing.

“You know?” I stared at him, raising an eyebrow.

“What? Would you rather me be falsely modest and say, ‘Well, I’m not handsome,’ and then you say, ‘Oh, but you’re sohandsome.’ And then I say, ‘Do you really think so?’ and then you say—”

“Okay, okay,” I said, cutting him off. “Fine. Yes, you’re handsome, and yes, you know it, obviously, and you’re rich, and you could have any woman in New York City.”

“Or the world,” he interjected.

“Really, Travis?”

“What? I just—”

I rolled my eyes. Travis Covington was gorgeous and wealthy and the sort of guy pretty much any straight woman in the world would want to date. And he was just not my type. I’d met men like him before, and I didn’t want to go down that road. I didn’t want someone who had everything because men who had everything were never satisfied. They were never happy, and I didn’t want to date a man who could never be happy with just me.

Not that Travis had said he wanted to date me seriously. I knew he probably wanted a one-night stand with me, have some fun, and then move on. I mean, it wasn’t like he was seriously going to date a random girl who started working at his company. But I didn’t want to be that woman who hooked up with him for a couple of nights and then went on my way. I was looking for something real. I was looking for something out of a fairy tale.

My friend Alice, who had gotten me the job, was dating Foster, the guy who worked at the company with Travis, and I could see how much in love with each other they were. I could see how much they really cared about each other, and that was what I wanted. I didn’t want a man who looked at me with lust. I…

“Come on, I know a bar around the corner. We can dance and drink and just talk if that’s what you want to do.”

I looked into Travis’s deep-azure eyes, and I could feel my body melting. As much as I didn’t want to have a one-night standwith him, I was having a hard time convincing my body of that fact. He was gorgeous, like the sexiest man I’d ever seen in my life, and something about powerful men turned me on. There was a charisma, a charm that every man didn’t possess.

Travis held his hand out to me and smiled. “What do you say, Molly? How’s about one night of fun, and if you don’t enjoy it, we never have to do it again?”
