“You know he’s not going to fire you.”

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure he’ll fire me if I suck as an assistant. We had sex once, Poppy. He’s not going to keep me as his assistant working for his company making six figures if I don’t know what the difference between an ETF and a mutual fund is.”

“A what?” she said.

“Exactly. Anyway, I’m nearly at the subway. Can I speak to you later?”

“Okay,” she said. “And Molly?”

“Yes? Yes, Poppy?”

“I just want you to know I’m so proud of you for this new job, and I know you’re going to kill it and do amazing, and you know I’m just joking when I tease you about Travis.”

“I know. It’s okay. And guess what?”

“What?” she said.

“I might be in San Francisco later this week. Maybe we can grab lunch and dinner and stuff.”

“Oh yeah, that would be absolutely amazing. You going to tell anyone else?”

“I don’t know.” I sighed. “I should tell my parents, but I don’t know that I want to see them, and well, I don’t know that I want to see the others, either.”

“I understand. But they’d be really shocked and surprised.”

“Yeah, they would be,” I said. “And normally, I would want to impress them, but I don’t want to say anything until I know I’m going to keep this job because nothing is more embarrassing than boasting about a job and then losing it.”

Chapter 11

“Hey,Molly, so good to see you.” Foster opened the door to his apartment and let me inside. “Alice is just getting changed. She’ll be out in a couple of minutes.”

“Oh, no worries,” I said, smiling at him widely. “Thanks, and thank you so much for offering to be our teacher for the first couple of weeks. This job means a lot to me, and I really want to impress, especially now that I’m the assistant to the CEO.”

“Sure.” Foster nodded. “Would you like something to drink?”

“Yes, please. What do you have?”

“We have wine, vodka, champagne.”

“Oh, nothing alcoholic,” I said. “I want to remind myself that I’m here to work and not for pleasure.”

“Sure,” he said. “We have Diet Coke, regular Coke, orange juice, LaCroix, I think a mango.”

“I’ll have a mango LaCroix please.”

“Sure,” he said.

I watched as he walked over to the fridge and opened it. He took out a can of the LaCroix and passed it to me.

“Here you go. Would you like a glass?”

“No, this is fine. Thanks.”

“So how did your second day go?”

“Um, it was pretty good. Thank you. I didn’t really have to do much since Travis wasn’t in the office.”

Foster nodded. “Yeah. I guess he was meeting with some investors from Brazil for the new branch we’re opening.”
