“Okay. I guess that made sense.”

“Does it?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “Now’s the time to ask any questions.”

“Yeah. Can we talk about stocks and bonds again? What exactly is the difference?”

Alice started laughing, and I looked at her in surprise. “Sorry, girl. Trust me. I’m not laughing at you. I am laughing because that’s the question I was going to ask.”

Foster looked at us both and shook his head. “Oh my. This is going to be a long night, huh?”

Alice and I looked at each other and sipped on our wine. Neither one of us said anything. I mean, what could we say? We were working for a hedge fund with absolutely no idea as to anything financial. I felt like an imposter. I felt like I shouldn’t have gotten the job, but I wasn’t going to tell anyone that. I didn’t want to get fired, and I was smart, and I had a good head on my shoulders. I would get it, and I would understand. Who knew? Maybe one day, I’d be one of the top managers at the company. It was a long shot, but then you never knew what would happen in life.

Chapter 12

I yawnedas I stared at the notes I’d made earlier in the evening. Foster was a godsend, and I was starting to understand at least the very basic fundamentals of investing. I definitely wasn’t an expert, and I wouldn’t want to have to invest or advise anyone anytime soon. But I was starting to understand the terms and basic principles. I looked at my alarm clock and saw that it was midnight. I should really be getting to bed. I knew I couldn’t afford to be late in the morning, and I was hoping I would get to see Travis, though I wasn’t sure what his calendar was for the next day. I was going to need to speak to him about that. If I was his assistant, I should know his whereabouts.

My phone started ringing, and I frowned as I dug around on my night table to find it. I was surprised to see Travis’s name on the screen. I wasn’t sure whether I should answer it but then relented.

“Hello?” I said, yawning. “Do you know what time it is?”

“It’s time for us to have a talk,” he said with a seductive tone.

“I was just about to go to sleep. I have to work tomorrow morning, you know.”

“I do know, seeing as you work for me, and that’s why I’m calling.”

“Oh, what, are you giving me the day off already? Really, you shouldn’t,” I said, laughing.

“No, you’re not getting the day off. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.”

“What do you mean it’s quite the opposite?”

“I need you to get to work early tomorrow.”

“What? What do you mean? How early?”

“I need you to be there around six o’clock.”

“Six o’clock?” All tiredness was gone from my voice. “Are you joking? I can’t get there at six. There’s just no way.”

“I’ll send my driver to pick you up.”

“But it’s midnight now. That gives me six hours to sleep. Actually, less because I have to shower and get ready.”

“Well, then maybe you should have gone to bed earlier.”

“If I’d gone to bed earlier, then we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.”

“Yet wearehaving this conversation.”

“Yeah, but—”

“But nothing. Couldn’t you sleep, my dear?”

I ignored his coaxing, tender voice. “No, I could sleep.”

“So what were you just thinking about me?”

“No,” I said quickly.
