“One is fine,” he said.

“Actually, two.”

He looked over at me. “You don’t need a key, honey.”

“Excuse me. What do you mean I don’t need a key? I would like a key, too.”

“But you won’t be leaving the hotel room without me. So…”

“Who says I won’t be?”

“Me,” he said and turned back to the front desk clerk. “One key, thank you.”

I hissed up at him. “I want a key. What if I want to go out? What if you go somewhere?”

He stared down at me. “What, you want to meet up with Matthew?”

“No, I don’t want to meet up with Matthew. But…”

“But what?”

“Maybe I want to meet up with someone else.”

“Like who? Another boyfriend?”

I let out a deep sigh. “No, in fact, that’s…” I paused. I didn’t want him to know everything about me.

“What were you going to say?”

“I want to meet up with my best friend, Poppy.”

“Oh.” He looked at me for a couple of seconds. “I didn’t know your best friend lived here.”

“Well, she does.”

“Okay. Well, would you like to invite her to dinner?”

“I’d love to go to dinner with her.” I nodded. “That would be great.”

“No,” he said. “I mean, invite her to dinner with the two of us. I would love to meet her.”

“Really?” I stared at him in surprise. “Why do you want to meet her?”

“Because she’s your best friend.”

“Yeah and?”

“And I would like to know more about you and see what your friends are like.”

“But why?”

“Because I’m interested in getting to know you as a person.”

“But why?” I said.

Travis pressed his lips together. “Sorry.” He looked at the front desk clerk.

“It’s okay. If you guys want to talk some more, then I can just wait.” She looked slightly nervous.
