“Why would it be weird?”

“Because why would you be holding my hand?” I shook my head.

“I don’t know.” He shrugged. “It was just a suggestion.”

“It’s fine,” I said. “Let’s not make this any more complicated than it has to be.”

I was starting to feel confused by Travis. I didn’t want the lines to become blurred between us. I would love for him to hold my hand. I would love for him to take me on dates, but I didn’t want to build up anything in my head. I didn’t want to hope for more. He wasn’t that sort of man, and I knew that I was an enigma to him. I knew that once he tired of me, he would move on to the next, and then I’d be heartbroken. I’d be heartbroken if I thought there was a possibility of something more.

No, I had to stick to the rules and the guidelines. It was just sex, hot sex, and it was fun. And I would enjoy it for what it was. And then, I wouldn’t be so hurt or heartbroken when it ended. That was it.

The elevator pinged, and Travis tapped me on the shoulder. “This is us,” he said softly. “Let’s go and see our room.”

Chapter 20

“So welcometo the presidential suite, Ms. Malone,” Travis said as he opened the doors to the hotel room.

I stepped inside and smiled. “This is nice,” I said as I walked over to the king-size bed and sat down. I looked around the room and grinned as I saw Travis approaching me. “What are you doing?”

“I came to see if the mattress is soft,” he said, sitting on the bed next to me. He leaned back. “It’s quite comfortable.”

“It is,” I said as I leaned back. We were both staring at the ceiling now.

“So what are we having for dinner?” he inquired.

“I’m not sure,” I said. “I told Poppy she could choose.”

“And what sort of food does she normally like to eat?”

“Oh, everything. Sushi, steak, lobster.” I laughed. “Pretty much the only thing I know she wouldn’t choose is a vegan restaurant.”

“Okay. She’s not into vegetables?”

“No, she likes them okay. She just really likes meat. I guess we’re both like that.”

“Oh yeah. I could tell you like meat.”

He turned on his side and faced me. I tilted my head to the side and looked at him.

“And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“I mean, I know you like my meat.” He grinned at me.

I just shook my head as I stared into his beautiful blue eyes. “I guess,” I said, not knowing what else to say.

He chuckled slightly. “So, what did you think of the meeting today?”

“At Salesforce?”

“Yeah,” he said. “What were your thoughts?”

“I don’t know that I’m qualified to really give my opinion.”

“You’re obviously qualified to give your opinion,” he said, staring at me. “I mean, yes, you don’t have experience in this field, so your opinion might not mean as much.” He paused. “Wait, that doesn’t sound right. I mean, your opinion might not be as qualified as someone with more experience in the field, but that’s not why I’m asking you.”

“Well,” I said, “honestly, I don’t think I like Columbus Campo.” I shrugged.

“And why is that?” he asked, peering at me with an inscrutable expression.
