“It’s nice to meet you, Poppy,” he said, giving her a warm smile.

I wondered if he was attracted to her. Poppy was one of the most gorgeous women I knew, and pretty much every guy tried to shoot his shot with her, but she was oblivious to men. Not because she wasn’t interested, but because she didn’t have that much experience. She had been so focused on her studies for such a long time that she hadn’t learned the art of flirtation. So she never knew when a man was paying special attention to her.

I looked into Travis’s face to see if he was flirting, and I was pleased to see that while he was smiling at her warmly, he didn’t have that extra glint in his eyes.

“I’ve heard so much about you,” Poppy said, “and I can’t wait to find out more.”

“I’m sad to say that I haven’t heard that much about you aside from the fact that you’re best friends with Molly. So I look forward to getting to know you, too.”

“Awesome,” she said. “Well, the maître d’ told me the table would be ready in about ten minutes. I was just about to order a drink. Do you guys want to get something as well?”

Travis nodded. “That sounds like a great idea. I think I’ll get an old-fashioned. What would you like, Molly?”

“I think I’ll get a martini. What are you getting, Poppy?”

“I was going to get a pear martini.” She grinned. “Hold the olives.”

I laughed. “Yeah. Hold the olives for me.”

Travis looked over at me in surprise. “You don’t like olives?”

“Not really.” I shook my head.

“We hate olives,” Poppy said. “Disgusting. Olives should not be mixed with alcohol. Whoever came up with that is just gross,” she said, and Travis started laughing.

“Okay then,” he said. “So, Poppy, what is it that you do?”

“Right now?” she said, making a face.

“Well, maybe not this very instance, but generally,” he said, and I knew he was wondering exactly what was going on.

“Well, I don’t have a job right now,” she said. “I just got my master’s degree from Berkeley in comparative history, and I’m hoping to figure out what I want to do with my life and my degrees.” She laughed. “I’m thinking maybe I’ll get a PhD, but I don’t really know if that’s the right move for me.”

“Oh, what would you get a PhD in?”

“I was thinking British history.” She smiled. “Because I absolutely love British history. My dad is British and…” She paused. “Sorry, I don’t want to bore you.”

“Oh, you’re not boring me.” He shook his head. “I asked.”

“Cool,” she said. “Well, I can tell you all about…”

“Poppy.” I gave her a look.

Travis looked at me. “What’s going on?”

“Poppy loves history, and she can talk about it for hours and hours and hours. So unless we want to talk about random facts from World War II and the Spanish Armada, then we don’t necessarily want to get her started.”

“Hey.” Poppy grinned, shaking her head at me. Then she looked at Travis. “But she’s right. Sometimes I get so caught up in historical facts that I kind of forget where I am, and tonight is about Molly and me catching up and me getting to know you and, you know, you getting to know me because who knows? We might be in each other’s life for a…”

I glared at her.

She shrugged. “I mean, just because you’re working for him and who knows? You might work for him forever, so if I come to New York like I plan, I might see him again.”

I shook my head. “Really, Poppy?”

“What?” she said. “I wasn’t meaning in case you guys…” She paused and looked over at Travis.

He was smiling widely now.
